Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores — Saturday, June 8

IT WAS a bad day for both Werrington and Callington in the ECB Cornwall Premier League on Saturday as they both suffered defeats at their respective ends of the table.

Werrington visited title favourites Penzance and lost by 90 runs.

After winning the toss, the defending champions’ decision looked vindicated as they dismissed openers Scott Harvey (32) and Ryan Edwards at 53-2.

However, the hosts have an exceptional middle-order in the shape of former first-class cricketers Greg Smith and Tom Wells, and they combined to put on 158 for the third wicket before Smith was bowled by Tom Dinnis (3-62) for 65.

But Wells, who played almost 100 games for Leicestershire, carried his bat, eventually ending on 136 as Penzance made 290-6 off their 50 overs. Jono Baldock bowled well for his 3-52 off ten.

Werrington needed a decent start but fell to 22-3 with Matt Robins, Ben Jenkin and Paul Smith all back in the shed.

Mark Gribble made a steady 51 off 96 balls but a lack of support saw them slip to 122-7.

But such is their batting depth, tailenders Dinnis (15), Baldock (38no) and Dan Barnard (19) batted out their overs to finish on 205-9, ensuring they picked up maximum batting points and leaving Penzance ruing their failure to bowl them out.

Callington fell to a disappointing four-wicket loss at home to previously winless Grampound Road at Moores Park.

Callington were at full strength and boosted by the inclusion of West Indian overseas player Yannick Leonard.

But Leonard made just 9 as Lewis Sanders and Chris Roberts reduced them to 26-5.

Callington managed to eke out a further 84, thanks to Joe White (23), Brett Bruk-Jackson (11) and Nick Parker (19no), but 110 was never likely to be enough and so it eventually proved.

Chris Davies (3-17) took three early wickets as Grampound fell to 16-3.

But Roberts (34) and Tom Orpe (32) put on 61 together before Orpe and Chris Willett were dismissed in successive balls by Jim Shorten (2-12). But Matt South’s 19-ball 26 saw ‘the Road’ over the line.

In County Division One, struggling Werrington seconds pulled off the result of the day in the division as they beat high-flying Beacon at Ladycross.

Werrington were boosted by the inclusion of first team all-rounder Adam Hodgson who was unable to play away with his wife due to give birth at anytime, and he made a telling difference.

He batted the entire 50 overs for 113 in their 225-5, which also saw contributions from Scott Taskis (22), John Moon (17), Mark Hodgson (16), Darren Johns (16) and Mark Taskis (17no).

Beacon were well on top in the chase with opener James Gool (40) and number three Jordan Thomas (58) going well.

But Werrington’s four-pronged spin attack proved extremely hard to get away with the Hodgson brothers sharing five wickets as Beacon subsided to 135 all out.

Launceston were missing half their full side for the long trip to Ludgvan and were narrowly defeated by four wickets.

Robert Mutch (30) and Michael Bolt (23) got Launceston off to a flyer before they collapsed from 45-1 to 75-6. A couple of rain delays meant the game was reduced to 34 overs per side when they resumed, with the visitors getting up to 121 thanks to Phil Spry’s 18.

Ludgvan were rocking at 17-3 after a going over from Mutch (2-20) and Sam Pengelly (1-16), but a lack of change bowling proved decisive as Jon Olds (37) and Damon Nicholls (40) added 78 for the fourth wicket. Although skipper Kevin Worth (2-9) picked up a couple of late wickets on his first bowl of the year, Ludgvan scraped over the line with 22 balls to spare.

The comeback of the season so far in Division Two East took place at Roche as spinners Andrew De Rosa and Matt Williams gave Bude a 13-run success.

The coastal club made 182 in their innings with Matt Hookway (38), Matt Williams (37) and Matt Mansbridge (36) all getting in without going on further.

Roche looked set to cruise to their target as openers Adam Trudgeon (68) and James Cole (49) put on 121 before they reached 146-2.

However the dismissal of Trudgeon for 68 — stumped by Mark McManus off Williams — started an incredible collapse which saw them lose their last eight wickets for 23.

Williams ended with 6-35 with De Rosa not far behind on 4-41.

There was an even closer finish at Luckett as they fell to an agonising two-run defeat to ten-man Tideford.

Tideford were held to 162-8 in a 40-over contest with Angus Harley taking 4-26 and Mark Southcott (0-24) and Richard Brown (2-25) both bowling tight spells.

Like seven days earlier at St Minver, openers Richard Brown (47) and Luke Brenton (18) got the innings off to a solid start before Jack Sleep and Ryan Brown both went for ducks.

Luckett collapsed to 123-8 after drinks and looked like they’d fall well short. However, number ten Matt Shapland made a brilliant 21 and headed into the last over needing three to win. But with three balls remaining, he was bowled off the inside edge.

St Minver are now just a point ahead of the bottom two after losing by seven runs at Grampound Road seconds.

A rain delay meant the game was reduced to 42 overs per side with ‘the Road’ totalling 162-9. Crucially the last two partnerships added 24 which proved decisive although Ross Keast (3-37) and Robert Hawken (3-27) both bowled excellently.

St Minver’s much-vaunted top three were back in the pavilion at 48-3 and in need of a partnership.

Tom Preston-Evans continued his fine form since joining from Tintagel with 45 as he and Hawken put on 68.

From there on, St Minver’s last six batsmen added just 17 with Hawken being ninth out at 148.

Tintagel moved away from the relegation zone in Division Three East after easing past visiting Boconnoc at Butts Field.

Simon Harrison and Jordan Burnard made 60 and 49 respectively for the hosts in their 192-6.

In reply, Simon Fry dismissed dangerman John Niblett for 0 and from there on, the Deer Park club failed to get started, eventually being dismissed for just 89.

James Ellis and Matthew Pethick took three apiece with Fry ending with 2-25 off his 11 overs.

Launceston seconds remain rooted to the foot of the table after a poor batting performance at home to their Roche counterparts.

After choosing to bat, only Mark Forshaw with 18 reached double figures in their meagre 64 all out.

Although Shane Davey (3-17) and David Sillifant (2-3) took all five wickets to fall, Aiden Le Masurier completed his fine all-round game with an unbeaten 26 after earlier claiming three wickets.

Bude seconds are now in the bottom two after losing by four wickets to St Blazey at Crooklets.

Lee Houghton top-scored for the hosts with 36 in their 147 all out and it looked like the upset was on when seamer Mark Whitefield ran through the top-order on his way to 4-18 off 12 overs.

However the experienced duo of Andrew Thomas (24) and Keith Reid (34no) steadied the ship as they snuck home with four balls to spare.

Across the A372 at Holsworthy, the league leaders romped to a nine-wicket success over a severely-depleted Newquay seconds.

Jack Greening made it in 11 wickets in two games with 5-23 off his 12 overs while his new ball partner Matt Shepherd provided excellent support with 4-36 as Newquay were dismissed for just 63, that after the openers added 27.

Although Holsworthy lost Jack May for 12, Aiden Gerry (27no) and Ryan Walter (9no) had no problems knocking off the rest.

Two Post area sides collided at South Petherwin but it was Callington seconds who left with a five-wicket win. With the firsts at full strength, the likes of Peter Tancock, Toby May and Alex Mortimore made rare appearances for the visitors.

South Petherwin totalled 175-8 off their 44 overs with Ian Clements (37) and Nick Gerry (31) each reaching 30 while Adrian Warne made 15 on his return from injury.

Callington’s reply was solid although spinner Adrian Clements did his best to ruin it with 4-52.

May, Tom Neville, James Moon, Mortimore and Ashley Small all passed 20 with Moon’s 36 being the best.

In Division Four East, Werrington thirds fell to their first defeat of the season after losing a thriller to Buckland Monachorum.

Werrington scrambled up to 121-9 off their 40 overs, their task was made much harder by Dan Rogers’ 6-33. Nick Ward top-scored with 37 while the experienced Adam Paynter and Trevor Dingle both contributed with 19 and 16 respectively.

Teenagers James Adams (3-37) and Toby Ward (4-29) then demolished the Buckland batting line-up to leave them eight down with more than 50 to get. However Luke Dennis (30no) and Rogers (20no) showed brilliant composure to bat through and win them the game.

Luckett seconds’ poor away form continued as they lost by four wickets to Grampound Road thirds.

Luckett batted their 40-over allocation for 147-5 with loan player Richard Budge (41) and Richard Seeley (37) both undefeated.

In reply, the visitors took three early wickets, two of which fell to Martin Budge (3-38). However, Isabel Grant-French (46) and former Premier League player Sean Hooper each made forties with the winning runs coming with 53 balls to spare.

Delabole’s home clash with Lanydrock seconds fell foul of the poor weather in the lead up to the game.

Division Five East title favourites Menheniot-Looe seconds proved too strong for their South Petherwin counterparts at Fourgates, although Petherwin will be left disappointed after a rapid fire start from openers Connor Warne (58) and Michael Clements (36).

With one over lost due to rain, Petherwin totalled 199-9 from 39 overs with Gareth Clements adding late impetus with 49.

Menheniot coasted to their target with five overs remaining as openers Stephen Gliddon and Hugh Tomkinson made 94 and 47 respectively. Peter Dingle had 2-34 off seven overs.

Milton Abbot lost a high-scoring game at Pencarrow against Wadebridge thirds by 17 runs.

Chasing 231, Milton Abbot were dismissed for 213 with Tom Rickard (79) and Richard Baxter (57) both making half centuries.

In the basement division, St Minver seconds kept up their unbeaten start by thrashing Gunnislake on the North Cornwall coast.

Former Wadebridge first teamers Matt Gilbert and Karl Daly both made centuries in their 274-4 which was 127 too many to get. Left-arm spinner Nigel Hocking had the remarkable figures of ten overs, five maidens, five wickets for seven runs before Steven Parsons (31), Sylvan Pook and Stephen Lees (35) added some respectability to end on 147-8.

Liskeard are up to second after beating Launceston thirds in a thriller at Lux Park. After choosing to bat, Launceston were dismissed for 138, 79 of which came from opener Brett Grosvenor.

However the visitors put in a brilliant bowling performance, only to be denied by 81 from Andrew Cobb who made it 597 runs for the year from just five games. His dismissal to Sam Bunn was his first of 2019.

Will Harvey (2-44), Emma Barnes (2-14), and the Bunns — Paul (2-9) and Sam (2-32) — were all in the wickets.

Werrington fourths moved into mid-table with a 94-run success over Menheniot-Looe thirds at Duloe.

Captain Nigel Dennis carried his bat once more for 77 in Werrington’s 174-7 with Matt Chatfield weighing in with 24.

Tony Scown, James Turner and Steve Pike all took two apiece as Menheniot were dismissed for 80.

Tintagel seconds timed their chase to perfection at their Boconnoc counterparts as they passed their target of 178 with seven balls to spare to win by eight wickets.

Opener Richard Pethick batted the whole way through for 59 with Tom Harris (47), Stephen Roach (28) and Aaron Washer (11no) adding the impetus.
