CALLINGTON director of cricket Joe White praised the Greens bowling attack after they got their ECB Cornwall Premier League title push started on Saturday with a four-wicket success over visiting Werrington.

The Ladycross-based outfit were dismissed for just 132 having been in a good position at 100-3, and although Cally’s star-studded batting line-up failed to get started, not helped by a superb spell of 4-22 from Adam Hodgson, they got the job done.

White had particular praise for opening Mohammed Danyaal whose 4-36 proved key.

He said: “Overall, we were pleased with the outcome of Saturday’s game. We bowled well early on, with Danyaal setting the tone by claiming two quick wickets to give us a strong start. John Moon batted really well for them, digging in against some quality bowling which was impressive.

It was also fantastic to see 17-year-old Spencer Whatley take his first Premier League wicket, especially given that it was Werrington’s overseas professional. Although his three overs were a bit expensive, it’s a wicket that will give him plenty of confidence going forward.

“At 100-3, I thought we might be chasing somewhere in the region of 180 to 200, but Danyaal returned and took out Moon and Adam Hodgson, and then our spinners turned the game on its head. (Max) Tryfonos was exceptional, conceding just nine runs in his seven overs, building pressure that bought wickets at the other end. Waggy (Graham Wagg, 3-4 off 5) and Harry Sawyers (2-14) then capitalised brilliantly, tearing through the middle and lower order to leave us with a manageable total to chase.”

A chase of 133 was always likely to be achievable, although they did drop a batting point.

White continued: “Our batting started solidly with Aidan Libby and Liam Lindsay looking comfortable at the crease until Aidan fell to a good delivery from (Dan) Barnard.

After we lost Liam and Xavie in successive balls, Tryfonos and Waggy then steadied the innings, guiding us towards the target.

“Although we were disappointed to lose a few late wickets, which meant we missed out on the full 20 points, a win is a win and we were definitely happy with that.”

Callington are on their travels this Saturday when they make their longest trip of the season to St Just (1pm), and although Cally start as firm favourites, White isn’t taking anything for granted.

He said: “We know it will be a tough contest at Cape Road. They have a balanced side, with a strong mix of youth and experience, and they always play hard, competitive cricket.

“But we’ve now won our last five games and feel we’re building great momentum. We'll be aiming to carry that fearless, winning mentality into Saturday.”
