WERRINGTON’s under 13s won the Tamar Youth League Cup Final with a nine wicket victory over a strong Callington side last Friday night.

Batting first, Callington got off to a flying start through Adam Snowdon and Lois Thornton, before Thornton was clean bowled by Taylor Gerry in the fifth over. However, that didn’t deter Snowdon as he continued to blaze the ball through the offside with regularity. Now joined by Kye Murray-Dustan, they enjoyed a 50 partnership, which saw Murray-Dustan impress with a wide range of shots, many of which were hammered over the top of fielders.

As are the rules with under 13s cricket, batsmen have to retire at 30 and once Snowdon and Murray-Dustan had reached their milestones, Werrington fought back to restrict the visitors to 119-3 off their 20 overs. Pick of the bowlers for Werrington was Freddie Ward with 1-9 off his four overs while Gerry (2-24) and Jack Farmer (1-17 also impressed on a typical Werrington track that was excellent for batting.

In reply, Gerry and Ward knew the importance of seeing off the new ball threat of Snowdon and James Slater. Despite the odd alarm, they batted sensibly, as they looked to accumulate before the change bowlers came on.

Once they came on, they opened up, both reaching 30 before having to retire.

Despite Eddie Steedman falling for just 3 to Ben Farrant, Farmer (9no) and James Adams (5no) eased them to victory with nine balls remaining.

Under 13s’ coach, Nick Ward, was delighted with the result and the season as a whole.

He said: “It was an excellent game of cricket played in the right spirit while most importantly there was lots of talent on show. I was especially pleased with the way our openers batted against the best opening bowling attack we’ve faced all year.”

In the other cup competitions, Werrington were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the Cornish round of the National Cup to Camborne, while in the County under13 tournament, they reached the quarter-finals, losing to Grampound Road.
