WERRINGTON?Cricket Club will take on St Austell in the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup final at St Austell on Wednesday, July 4 (6pm).
The Ladycross outfit defeated County Division One strugglers Gorran by seven wickets last Wednesday night to set up a showdown with their Premier League rivals at Wheal Eliza next month.
After losing the toss and finding themselves in the field, Werrington’s bowlers got off to an excellent start.
Opener Jacob Lakeman was clean-bowled for a duck by Australian Jono Baldock (3-15 off four overs), while dangerman Robin Kendall was kept particularly quiet, scratching his way to nine from 26 balls before he was caught by Adam Hodgson off the bowling of Ben Smeeth (3-11 off four).
Early on it was only Rory Dixon with 33 from 28 balls that kept the scoreboard ticking over as the visiting spinners kept a tight lid on the run-rate.
However on a small ground, runs are always likely to come, and it was skipper Ryan Clark’s 36 off 25 balls, which provided the fireworks to push Gorran up past 100 as they ended on 112-7 off their 20 overs.
Needing less than six an over, the visitors opened with former Cornwall captain Matthew Robins and Hodgson and they added 65 for the first wicket with Robins, who was out for an excellent 49 from just 28 balls that included eight fours and a six, the first man out as he was adjudged lbw (leg before wicket) off left-arm seamer James Tomlinson (1-28 off four overs).
Although Mark Gribble (2) and Baldock (3) were swiftly seen off by off-spinner Rhys Daniel (2-29 off four), Hodgson (28 not out from 32 balls) was joined by skipper for the night, Nick Lawson, who smashed a rapid unbeaten 25 from just 13 balls, which included four fours and a maximum, to send the Premier League side into a second successive final.
Last year they defeated Grampound Road and if they can get past St Austell will take on either Redruth, St Just, Penzance or Truro in the Edwards Cup final at Truro next month.
Those four clubs make up the semi-final line-up in the Vinter Cup, which is contested by the western clubs, with the winners taking on the eastern champions for the right to represent Cornwall in the Group Six Area Final later in the summer.
