Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores

WERRINGTON will take on St Just in the second semi-final Tribute T20 Kernow Crash Finals Day at Grampound Road on Sunday after beating St Austell twice to top Pool B on net run-rate.

Paul Smith’s side went to Wheal Eliza on Saturday knowing that they’d have to beat the previously unbeaten hosts on both occasions after losing to both Wadebridge and Truro.

The first game was a one-sided affair as the home side could only manage a meagre 74-9 off their 20 overs with spinners Ben Smeeth (4-13) and Paul Smith (3-12) doing the damage.

In response, an unbeaten 39 from Adam Hodgson along with 20 from Matt Robins saw them to a nine-wicket victory.

The second contest was a thriller with Werrington winning by just five runs after posting 126-7, with the majority of those coming from Smith (41) and Mark Gribble (44).

At 85-5 St Austell were the favourites, however a lack of support for Scott Barrott’s hard-hit 45 meant they came up short.

Smeeth and Hodgson had the identical figures of 2-21 off their four overs while Jono Baldock also bowled well for 2-12 off his three.

This weekend sees the ECB Cornwall Premier League get underway with Werrington looking to retain their crown.

They start at home to Redruth, which will give them an excellent early indicator of where they stand, before going to Grampound on Sunday for the T20 Finals Day.

If they beat St Just (1.30pm) they’ll take on either Penzance or St Austell in the final (4.30pm).

Callington ended up with just a solitary win to their name in the T20 Kernow Crash after two heavy defeats at Wadebridge in Pool B.

The visitors restricted their hosts to 131-9 in their innings with Alex Robinson, Chris Davies and first team debutant Toby Morgan all bowling tidily.

However, their response was a poor one as they were bowled out for just 61, Joe White top scoring with 21.

The second game of the day was even more one-sided. Wadebridge knocked up a massive 180-4 with South African overseas Kevin Renecke carrying his bat for an unbeaten 81 off 60 balls while James Turpin (28 off 17), debutant Matt Butler (22 off 9) and Matt Jolliffe (17 off 16) all ensured they kept the run-rate up.

Leg-spinner Harry Sawyers picked up a couple of wickets.

Callington were then rolled over for a second time, this time managing 68. Morgan, batting at number ten, made 15 of those.

In County Division One, Kevin Worth’s brilliant 104 not out off 79 balls was in vain as Launceston fell to a 46-run defeat at leaders Beacon.

After sending the hosts in, the Tolcarne Road outfit made an imposing 250-5 with opener James Gool top-scoring with 82.

Launceston’s four frontline bowlers all bowled tidily but a lack of a fit fifth bowler meant the other ten went for 88.

In response, Launceston’s habit of losing early wickets cost them again as they fell to 121-7 despite Robert Mutch (18), Michael Diebner (17), Sam Pengelly (22) and Brandon Forsyth (14) all reaching double figures.

From there, Worth launched a stunning assault on the Beacon bowling, hitting 13 fours and six sixes, many of which were miles out of the ground, as he put on 77 with number nine Ashley Taylor, who hung around for his four from 24 balls.

However once Taylor departed at 198, the last two wickets fell for six more runs, with three overs unused.

Werrington seconds, like Launceston, fell to a third successive defeat after losing to their Redruth counterparts by 30 runs at Ladycross.

Youngster Cameron Wakefield bowled superbly to take 4-46 on his home debut for Werrington since moving to the area, while skipper Mark Hodgson chipped in with 2-30 as Redruth rallied to make 180-8.

Werrington got off to a decent start with Scott Taskis (38), Ben Jenkin (35) and Hodgson (21) all in the runs.

But once they departed, they subsided tamely to 150 all out with six overs remaining.

The first tie of the season in the Cornwall Cricket League took place at St Minver as their first team tied with Wadebridge seconds in the local derby.

St Minver rallied from 48-3 to total 206-9, which was in no small part to a blistering 87 from Tom Preston-Evans and a steady 26 from Rob Hawken.

Openers Neil Kent (21) and Jamie Beare (26) put on 47 for the first wicket before three wickets fell for 23 runs.

Neil Richards (76) and Rob Centini (33) then put on a brilliant stand of 66 before Richards batted all the way to the last over, before he was run out trying to get back on strike.

A single off the last ball by Dave Dunnett ensured a tie. Charlie Hawken (2-60) and Ryan Pooley (2-33) shared four of the seven wickets to fall.

Luckett made it four wins from as many starts ahead of their top-of-the-table clash at Newquay on Saturday after easing past St Erme at Chapel Field.

The hosts totalled 209 with Luke Brenton top scoring with 82 while Andrew Hoskin made 38.

An understrength St Erme were going along well at 50-2 before Jonathan Hoskin (4-21) and Mark Southcott (2-27) got to work as the visitors ended up being bowled out for just 126. Angus Harley kept up his good start for the club with 3-37.

Bude made it two wins and two defeats so far after being well beaten by a strong Menheniot-Looe side at Fourgates.

Andrew De Rosa made unbeaten 59 in Bude’s 182-8 which was surpassed in just the 24th over following half centuries from Luke Ripley (76) and Ben Millar (50). Matt Williams backed up his 20 with 2-67 with his off-spin.

Holsworthy overcame a big scare at Launceston seconds before eventually winning by 20 runs in Division Three East.

After being sent in, Matt Shepherd’s rapid 47, Jack Greening’s well-paced 46 not out and Aiden Gerry’s 25 saw them knock up 179-7. Matt Bloomfield (2-49), Ethan Green and David Sillifant (2-50) were the wicket-takers.

Openers Phil Spry (20) and James Dawe (41) put on a half century partnership before the dismissal of Spry to Shepherd (3-21), who quickly accounted for Darren Jenkin and Green.

However, he was soon hauled out of the attack after bowling three beamers and Launceston looked to take advantage.

But a combination of tight bowling and poor shots saw them fall 20 short despite a streaky unbeaten 27 from Sillifant and 50 extras. Rob Mitchell bowled well at the death for 2-32.

Tintagel picked up their second win in a row after a 78-run victory at Bude seconds.

Ben Lane’s six-laden 78 plus 58 helped the visitors make 284-6 with Gary Moore (2-74) and Gordon Wint (2-74) taking half of the wickets to fall.

Wint then made a typically aggressive 90 and received support from Mike Ellis (20) and the returning Charlie Gliddon (32).

However once they departed, the innings fell away with Ryan Pooley (3-58) and Lane (2-49) sharing five wickets.

An understrength South Petherwin were well beaten by St Austell thirds at Kennards House after being set 178 to win.

Paul Clements (2-27) and Adrian Clements (2-24) were both miserly but the visitors targeted the rest of the bowlers.

Adrian Clements then top-scored from number ten with 17 as they were dismissed for 87.

Callington seconds’ home game with their Newquay counterparts didn’t go ahead after the visitors cried off, citing a lack of players suitable to play at that level.

In Division Four East, Werrington made it two wins from two after trouncing eight-man Gorran by nine-wickets at Ladycross.

Thankfully for the visitors they managed to win the toss and were dismissed for 126, Nick Oldaker claiming 4-13 off his seven overs.

In response, Nick Ward (68no) made it 178 runs without being dismissed from his two games so far as they got the job done in 29 overs.

Luckett seconds’ difficult start continued as they lost by 124 runs at Duloe. Skipper Steve Brown (3-42) and Richard Seeley (3-18) shared six wickets but Duloe managed 241 before being bowled out with five balls remaining.

In reply, Luckett struggled to score freely and ended up on 117-6 off their 40 overs. Opener Patrick Thompson made 40 and Seeley an unbeaten 21.

Delabole’s player struggles continued as they conceded to Bugle.

South Petherwin seconds fell to their first defeat of the year at Newquay thirds in Division Five East.

The hosts made 213-6 with Sam Payne taking 2-21.

Petherwin’s response was steady but failed to keep up with the rate with Ian Clements’ 51 the highlight, although Michael Clements (29), Adrian Martin (27) and Michael Townsend (22no) all passed twenty.

Milton Abbot failed to score 100 for the second successive week as they lost by 90 runs to Menheniot-Looe seconds. Tom Rickard bowled brilliantly for 4-12 off his ten overs, although Menheniot managed to recover to 168-6.

In reply, Paul Crocker made 26 but they were dismissed for just 78. No other batsman passed ten.

In Division Six East, Gunnislake made it two wins from two after overcoming Launceston thirds by 29 runs.

Their 157 all out was based around opener Andrew Morris’ unbeaten 88. Spinner Brett Grosvenor collected 4-34 while Emma Barnes chipped in with 2-28.

On a slow pitch, Launceston failed to keep up the run-rate and required late contributions from Paul Bunn (30no) and Paddy Webber (26) to make 128-8. Kai Murray Dustan (3-36), Ben Alford (2-6) and George Jefferis (2-22) were in the wickets.

Tintagel seconds won their first home by easing past Liskeard at Butts Field.

Martin Seldon made a rapid 83 not out in their 202-2 while skipper Dave Lane (41no) and Richard Pethick (21) supported.

Liskeard made 159-9 with Harry Daly (3-23) and Tom Harris (1-18 off 10) the pick of the home bowling.

After last week’s cry off from Menheniot-Looe thirds, St Minver seconds got their campaign off to an unbelievable start as they won by ten wickets at their Boconnoc counterparts in a game which lasted less than 22 overs.

The hosts were bowled out for just 33 with Charlie Edwards taking 6-18 and Nigel Hocking 3-14.

Openers Jake Keast (16no) and Matt Gilbert (14no) then knocked off the runs in 45 balls.

Werrington fourths fell to an 18-run defeat to St Austell fourths at Wheal Eliza.

The home side made 175-5 with Tony Scown taking 2-41 and Steve Pike 2-26.

Werrington’s experienced side fell short with Nick Wills (23) and Mike Howgill (22) the only two to pass 20.
