LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, July 28

THERE IS now a three-way tie at the top of the ECB Cornwall Premier League table after a dramatic rain-hit day across the Duchy last Saturday.

Werrington went into the day 12 points behind previous leaders Penzance, but a 31-run defeat for the Penwith club at home to Redruth coupled with Truro’s clash with St Just being abandoned left the North Cornwall outfit to claim 18 points from a 74-run victory over Wadebridge at Ladycross and join Truro and Penzance on 211 points with six games remaining.

Despite the game being delayed by 90 minutes, Werrington racked up a massive 260-6 off their 35 overs with skipper Paul Smith leading the way with 95 from just 69 balls.

Earlier, Matthew Robins, who had been promoted to the top of the order with regular opener Ben Smeeth moving down to number four, made 33 with Smeeth later making 34.

The end of the innings was dominated by Mark Gribble, who made it back-to-back half-centuries with 62 off just 43 balls.

In reply, Wadebridge fell to 54-3 with Smeeth (2-26) and Tom Dinnis (0-13) both proving hard to get away.

James Turpin, who spent last summer at Ladycross, made 69 as the Swans reached 186-7 from their allocation with Ian Worsnip taking 2-39 off four overs.

In County Division One, Launceston took advantage of three cancellations and their game in-hand over St Erme to take 13 points from their trip to league leaders Helston and move back off the bottom of the table.

In a solid batting effort, the visitors made 235-9 from their 50 overs with the returning Dan Tilley making 62 and Sam Pengelly 42. However they were indebted to Brandon Forsyth (18) and Ashley Taylor (5) for putting on an unbroken 26 for the tenth wicket.

Helston got off to a flyer thanks to Karl Leathley (36 off 28), however when he was bounced out by Robert Mutch (3-22), Steven Jenkin’s men slipped to 74-4 off 20.2 overs before the rain set in at Beacon Parc to put pay to any hopes of an away win.

Launceston’s opponents this weekend, Lanhydrock, weren’t in action as their home clash with Werrington seconds fell victim to the weather.

With morning rain and lunchtime showers sweeping across the county, which saw at least 20 games either cancelled or abandoned, the teams who did manage to play and win really made inroads.

In Division Two East, Bude kept the pressure on league leaders St Austell after both sides picked up 19-point wins while second-placed Luckett didn’t even take to the field at St Blazey.

Bude are now level on points with Luckett after a ten-wicket victory over St Minver at Crooklets.

They managed to restrict St Minver to just 118-8 off their 40 overs with Matthew Mansbridge (3-26) and Andrew DeRosa (3-34) sharing six wickets.

Openers Thomas Hall (60no) and Matthew Williams (41no) then knocked off the target in 26 overs.

Callington seconds’ pivotal clash at Newquay seconds never got underway.

South Petherwin continue to keep pace with Saltash and Wadebridge seconds at the top of Division Three East despite playing a game extra, after a four-wicket home victory over nine-man Gorran seconds.

The bottom club arrived in North Cornwall having won just once all season and could only muster 93 all out with Andrew Yelland (4-9) the chief wicket-taker.

In reply, the home side slipped to 48-5, but were guided home by Phil Pridham (23), Paul Clements (12no) and Jacob Masters (14no) ahead of this weekend’s visit of Tintagel, who saw their home clash with Roche seconds cancelled.

Werrington thirds picked up eight points from their 112-run defeat at Wadebridge in a match which was reduced to 36 overs.

The home side were bowled out for 237 off the last ball of their innings with Nick Ward (3-26) and Daniel Jenkin (1-39) the only bowlers to keep things under control.

In reply, only skipper Richard Stanbury (22) passed 20 as they were dismissed for 125.

In Division Four East, the big winners of the day were Launceston seconds, who are now within touching distance of the top two after league leaders Bude and Luckett seconds saw their matches abandoned.

Bude chose to field at Milton Abbot but could only pick up five wickets in the home side’s 116-5 with Mark Jenkins making an unbeaten 41 after Gordon Wint and Mike Taylor picked up a couple of wickets apiece. Rain called a halt to proceedings at Baxter Park.

Luckett made 148-9 from their 32 overs at home to Lanhydrock seconds with Patrick Thompson (29), Martin Hill (26) and Richard Seeley (25no) all passing 20.

However more rain at tea saw both teams agree enough was enough.

Launceston are now just 12 points behind Luckett ahead of this weekend’s clash at Bude.

They beat Grampound Road thirds by 84 runs at Lawhitton with David Cox (83) and Darren Jenkin (53) both making half-centuries in their 267-7.

Mark Forshaw provided the late fireworks with 48 not out in innings which included four sixes.

In reply, Chris Davey carried his bat for an unbeaten 83 as the hosts could only manage six wickets in a score of 184-6. Cox took 3-16 from eight overs.

In Division Five East, there were heavy defeats for Launceston thirds, Tintagel seconds and Werrington fourths while South Petherwin’s clash with Newquay fourths in Division Six East fell to the weather. Callington thirds conceded at home to their Roche counterparts.
