WERRINGTON Cricket Club’s first team will look to pick up their first piece of silverware of 2018 when they take on St Austell in the Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup final at St Austell on Wednesday evening (6pm).
The Ladycross outfit, who are currently third in the ECB?Cornwall Premier League table, are looking to retain the title they won against Grampound Road last summer, will be boosted by the inclusion of skipper Paul Smith, who has been unavailable for their previous encounters due to him now living in Birmingham.
Werrington were given a bye in the first-round before chasing down small totals of 86 and 112 against Callington and Gorran respectively to book their spot at Wheal Eliza.
The two clubs faced off in the league on Saturday with Werrington winning by 109 runs after posting 277-9 off their 50 overs.
If they’re successful again, they’ll win their eighth Hawkey Cup crown and set up a clash with either St Just, Penzance or Truro in the WT?Edwards Cup final later next month.
St Just thrashed Redruth by eight wickets in last week’s first semi-final while defending ECB Cornwall Premier League champions Truro and reigning Vinter Cup and Edwards Cup champions Penzance squared off last night in the last four.
However the Post had gone to press before the match was played.
If Penzance made it through, it’ll be a repeat of last year’s WT?Edwards Cup final, which saw the Penwith club cruise to a seven-wicket success at Truro.
