WERRINGTON Cricket Club have been handed a massive financial boost of £3,000 following the exploits of six of their players at the inaugural Cornish Big Bash at Penzance on Sunday, July 10.

The West Cornwall outfit hosted the T20 event, which saw four teams from the north, south, east and west of the county battle it out for a £5,500 prize for the winning side, which saw each player earn £500 for their club.

All 21 clubs, in both the ECB Cornwall Premier League and County One, were represented, with each captain having to choose at least one player from the teams in their respective area.

The Tamar Tigers, under the leadership of Werrington and Cornwall batsman Paul Smith, won the tournament, defeating the Penwith Pirates by 36 runs after posting 158-4 in their 20 overs.

In the final, the Werrington players turned it on as Mark Gribble (45no) and Adam Hodgson (24) led the way with the bat before Tom Dinnis took 2-14 with the ball.

Earlier in the day, Hodgson was again influential as he took 4-26 to help the Tigers edge out the Kernow Superkings by just two runs after scoring 145-8.

Three thousand pounds at grassroots sports level is a lot of money, leaving Werrington chairman, Richard Jenkin, ecstatic with the boys’ work.

Richard said: “I was absolutely delighted with the work of the Werrington boys’ down at Penzance last Sunday (July 10), especially of our first team captain Adam Hodgson who won the player of the tournament award.

“We held a committee meeting last Wednesday night to discuss what we wanted to do with the money and we think we’re going to put most of it towards our youth section to get some professional coaching in to help out our youngsters even more with the finer sides of the games so they can really develop further.

“At times I think that’s where we fall down a bit. The money generated from the Big Bash should really bring our youngsters on while we also need a new mower for the wicket and some sightscreen covers which are a little bit damaged.”
