WERRINGTON Cricket Club’s first team won the ECB Premier Division title for the third time in their history last weekend.

The fine achievement also marked star-player Alex Smeeth’s final game for the club which he has helped to many successes over the past decade or so.

Alex will now be emigrating to Australia with wife-to-be Aimee.

First team captain Ben Smeeth reflected on his brother Alex’s contribution to the club over the years ahead of his move Down Under.

Ben said: “Alex leaving to move to Australia with his wife to be Aimee will leave a huge hole in our family life but as long as they are safe and well thats all that matters to us.

“He will be missed by so many people as he is a thoroughly likeable character and tremendous cricketer who has clearly been one of the best in Cornwall for the past eight or nine years.

“He is the only player to have taken two nine wicket hauls in the ECB Cornwall Premier league and has scored nearly 10,000 runs and taken over 400 wickets for Werrington. He has been without question, the best player Werrington has ever had and he will be sorely missed by everyone at the club.”
