OVER 100 players and supporters attended Werrington Cricket Club’s annual presentation night at Trethorne on Friday, September 13.
The evening started with a two-course carvery with the club complimenting Trethorne on the usual high standard of food.
The club patriot Mr Mike Williams then proposed a toast to the club, then spoke about how it had been a very successful season and how it was good to see some very talented young players coming through the ranks. He continued to congratulate all the captains on doing a great job.
In response, the president, Paul Hicks, thanked the Williams family for their continued support and everyone who helped either on the pitch or behind the scenes to make the club what it is.
Nick Ward and Ben Smeeth then reported on the youth section and presented trophies to the teams.
The four captains then gave a report on their season starting with Nigel Dennis, who said the fourth team finished in a respectable mid-table position in Division Six East. He has used 29 players over the season and said player availability was a problem at times.
Daniel Jenkin was celebrating promotion for the third team back into Division Three East.
He said that team spirit was excellent with a few good young players coming into the team, and he was confident of a good showing next year with a combination of youth and experience to provide stability.
Second team skipper Mark Hodgson said it had been a tough season with key players unavailable at times.
With eight games to go relegation was on the cards, but a superb late season rally, which saw them win five of their last outings, saved the day. He then commented on the emergence of two excellent young players in John Moon and Cameron Wakefield and looked forward to the continued progression next season.
Paul Smith, the club captain, said the first team secured a very good third place in the ECB Cornwall Premier League, but he said he wanted to push on and challenge for the top spot again next season and securing another overseas player and strengthening the team would be his aim throughout the winter months.
He thanked everyone for all the help and support he has had at the club and said what an honour it is to captain ‘the best club in the South West’.
There then followed a presentation of the main trophies after which club members let their hair down and danced the night away to the Dan Warring Musical Experience.
