WERRINGTON?Cricket Club held their annual presentation evening at?Trethorne Leisure Park on Friday,?September 29.
It?was a mixed campaign for the Ladycross club on the field, but there was still much to shout about for the 90 club members who turned up.
The evening started with a carvery before club president, Andrew Smeeth, said a few words.
Head of Youth, Nick Ward, then gave a summary of the season which saw relative success for all three teams.
The under 13s reached the county final in both the National Cup and Cornwall Cup, which saw them lose to a strong Truro side in each while the under 11s won the Tamar Youth League and lost to Lanhydrock in the quarter-finals of the County Cup.
The under 15s were edged out by St Austell in the county semi-finals of the National Cup.
Ward told the Post:?“It was a really successful season for us, especially the under 13s who did brilliantly to reach the county finals in both the County Cup and National Cup.”
Once the junior winners had been announced, all four senior captains gave speeches on their seasons, which by Werrington’s high standards, didn’t go quite as planned.
The first team could only finish fourth in the ECB Cornwall Premier League while the second team finished second bottom in a highly-competitive County One.
For long periods of the season, Richard Stanbury’s third team looked in big trouble but yet again managed to survive in Division Three East, while the fourths, led by Nick Wills, finished fifth in Division Five Tamar.
Club chairman, Richard Jenkin, then announced the winners with just two players across the firsts and seconds picking up their awards.
Former skipper, Ben Smeeth, was rewarded for his phenomenal year, which saw him score over 500 league runs and take 30 wickets, by winning all four of the first team awards while second team captain Mark Hodgson, picked up the three main prizes for another decent campaign, which saw score 273 runs from 14 innings and take 21 wickets.
John Moon (358 runs at 32.55) and Nick Oldaker (23 wickets at 26.17) were the winners of the third team awards while Freddie Ward and Tom Gribble picked up the batting and bowling respectively in the fourths.
Jenkin then announced the rest of the awards with Dan and Lucinda Warring receiving the highly prestigious Clubperson of the Year award before Dan DJ’d a disco to end the evening.
Talking about the night, Jenkin said: “The spirit of the club has never been better. The results on the field were average but the spirit is great and we ended the evening with the Dan Warring Musical Experience.”
