HOLSWORTHY captain Ryan Walter wants his side to ‘string it altogether’ after slipping to a ‘hugely disappointing’ defeat at Werrington Seconds on Saturday in Division Two East.
The Trees were ahead in both innings, but the home side fought back to run out 30-run winners having been dismissed for 164.
Werrington found themselves 93-7 as after seamers Guy Beagley and Lewis Chidley took out the top order, Aiden Gerry (3-38) got stuck in as only youngster Ed Walters got started in a battling 33 from 82 balls.
Beagley (2-20 off 9) had earlier got the big wicket of Rob May (9) before castling Zander Zambuni (5), while Chidley (2-36 off 9) had key man Tom Lyle (4) caught at mid-wicket and then bounced out Rob Dymond for nought.
Dan Jenkin and Jason Seldon made 10 apiece, before Walters got a cut shot wrong off Graham Wild (1-23 off 9) and found Jack May at cover.
But Werrington had the dangerous Darren Webber at nine and he made a match-winning 52 to win them the game.
He struck five fours and two sixes, mainly through the leg-side, as Tyler May (5 off 28) and Ian Searle (4no off 23) dug in.
Sam Smeeth was the last man out when he tried to reverse sweep Aussie Noah Pigdon (2-28 off 8.3) and was bowled.
Webber (2-23 off 6) took the new ball and bowled Aiden Gerry (0) second ball, before he had Beagley (12) superbly caught at gully by Lyle for 12.
Brendan Harris (9) found Jenkin at point off Searle (1-29 off 9) and it was 24-3.
Rory Piper made an enterprising 19, but he was bowled by a fine delivery from skipper Jason Seldon (1-16 off 5).
But with Pigdon and Ryan Walter going well and the run-rate never an issue, Holsworthy looked well set at 107-4.
But when Pigdon (37) was bowled by a pearler from the pacey Tyler May, the wheels fell off.
Chris Pomeroy (4) found Zambuni at point off May before Walter (16) dragged on off Jenkin.
Jack May (8no) got a couple of boundaries away, but Adam Lovejoy gloved May (3-22 off 4) behind to Walters which allowed Jenkin (3-18 off 3.3) to trap Chidley (5) and Wild lbw in successive balls as the end came at 134.
Walter said: “On the balance of play, we felt it was a game that got away from us.
“It was a great effort to bowl them out for 164 with everybody bowling well, and although we lost early wickets which never helps, two or three of us got ourselves in.
To be 107-4 and not win was hugely disappointing as we should have got over the line.”
Holsworthy’s bowling has been much-improved in the last two games, but it is the batting which started the season well that needs to fire.
Walter said: “As I said, everybody bowled well, as they did at Luckett, which is a good sign going forward after the start to the season where we struggled.
“At the start of the season we were generally batting well and not doing enough with the ball, so now it’s about putting it all together.”
The Trees are 11 points adrift of third from last St Minver who they visit on Saturday, before they round off the first half of the campaign at home to bottom side St Austell Thirds next weekend.
Walter admits they need wins in both.
He said: “We have two massive games for us coming up and they’re ones we need to win.
“St Minver won’t be easy away from home as they seem to score a lot of runs, but a bit like us in recent weeks, perhaps don’t have the bowling depth.
“But all we can do is win both and then attack the second half of the season.”
