Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores

WERRINGTON look well placed to qualify for the Tribute T20 Kernow Crash Finals Day on Sunday, May 19 after a thrilling double-header at Wadebridge on Saturday.

Paul Smith’s men twice eased past Callington seven days earlier but were given two stiff examinations at Egloshayle Road with the spoils shared.

In the first game, ex-Werrington all-rounder James Turpin dominated the home innings, making a brilliant unbeaten 87 off 60 balls in their total of 133-5.

For the visitors, Ian Worsnip, who was only in the side due to Ben Smeeth being on county darts duty, was the pick, going for just 13 off his four overs as well as having opener Sam Richards stumped for 11.

Werrington were going along well at 55-2 with skipper Paul Smith (16) and Tom Hughes (16) well set. However, from there on, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as they were bowled out for 105 with three balls remaining. Nick Lawson made 25 off 21 balls.

Lawson was asked to open in the second game and although he was dismissed first ball by Charlie Ellis, Werrington went all out attack. Although wickets fell again to leave them in trouble at 22-3 and 64-6, man-of-the-match Mark Gribble produced a brilliant unbeaten 61 off 48 balls to guide them to 142-7. Tom Lyle provided excellent support with 24 from number eight.

Wadebridge rely heavily on Turpin and for as long as he was there the chase was on. But despite making 42, he was bowled by Adam Hodgson at 73-3. Although new skipper Callum Wilson weighed in with 28, Australian Jono Baldock proved pivotal for Werrington — going for just 14 off his four overs as they ended up 13 short despite having five wickets in-hand.

Werrington, who are second behind St Austell in Pool B on six points, welcome Truro to Ladycross on Saturday in the X Pool.

Callington bounced back from their tough time at Werrington by sharing the spoils with Grampound Road at Moores Park.

In the first game, Callington managed 131-8, which was built around 38 by skipper Joe White and a late 19-ball 25 from Brett Bruk-Jackson. However, ‘the Road’ had no trouble at all in chasing it down, losing just three wickets and managing it with 23 balls to spare. Matt South smashed 57 and captain David Hoskings 28 while Chris Roberts held the innings together with a patient 36 not out.

Callington bounced back in style in game two with a five-wicket success.

Off-spinner Alex Robinson (3-15) ripped out Roberts, South and Hoskings to leave the visitors reeling at 6-3. Although Chris Willett (27) and Tom Orpe (33) rebuilt the innings, once they were dismissed the innings was soon wrapped up for just 80 with left-armers Jim Shorten (4-13) and Matt Petherbridge (3-10) doing the damage.

Although opener Aidan Libby made a quick 19, Grampound were in the contest at 34-4. But White (24) and Oliver Allsop (19no) took them to within a run of victory before Allsop ended proceedings with a single.

Callington are at home to pool leaders St Austell this Saturday (1pm and 4.10pm).

Werrington seconds were left wondering what might have been after losing a classic to Rosudgeon at Ladycross in County Division One.

Both sides had players missing and it looked as if the hosts could make light work of the West Cornwall club when Danny Warne (3-24) took out the top order and skipper Mark Hodgson (2-48) dismissed his opposite number Matt Jacka at 48-4.

However Giles Lawrence was joined by Treve Polglase and they added 112 before Polglase was dismissed for a quickfire 60. But that didn’t stop Lawrence as he continued to open his shoulders, eventually finishing on a brilliant unbeaten 118 as he and Max Walden (17no) took them to 241-5.

Werrington looked dead and buried at 117-7 despite 35 from John Moon and 20s from Hodgson and Adam Jenkin.

But a 63 from just 45 balls from number nine Dan Warring along with support from Warne (24) and Robert Dymond (13no) took them close before the run-rate proved too much and they were bowled out 14 runs short with two balls to go.

Launceston suffered their first defeat as they were well beaten at a windy Gorran.

After being put into bat, the visitors got off to a woeful start as they fell to 36-5 and 78-8 with only Brandon Forsyth (12) and Kevin Worth (23) reaching double figures.

Youngsters Caleb Forsyth (14) and Tom Davey (12) along with some stubborn resistance from Andrew Yelland (1) got them up to 118.

In reply, Robert Mutch bowled unchanged for 3-34 off his ten but Robin Kendall (61no) showed his undoubted class to guide them to a five-wicket win.

The third highest individual score in Cornwall Cricket League history was scored by Ladock’s Matt Butler at St Minver in Division Two East.

Although dropped five times, Butler smashed 23 fours and 17 sixes in the visitors’ 405-8. Such was the carnage with one boundary being tiny, Dennis Brown went for 117 off his nine overs. Mark Turner, Ryan Pooley and Rob Hawken all took two wickets apiece.

In response, St Minver’s powerful batting line-up made a real game of it as they knocked up 345-9.

Skipper Ben Hawken made 109, Pooley (64) and Steve Hawke (54) both made half centuries and Rob Hawken (31) and Turner (26) contributed.

Luckett are second in the early table after beating relegated Roche at Chapel Field.

Leion Cole top scored with 48 while Luke Brenton made 36 in Luckett’s 194 all out with several others reaching double figures.

Roche got off to a decent start themselves, reaching 63-2 before key man Neil Trudgeon departed for just three.

From there on, batsmen got in and out as they were bowled out for 142. All six Luckett bowlers were in the wickets with Matt Shapland (3-21) and veteran Mark Southcott (2-28 off 12) the pick.

Bude bounced back from their comprehensive defeat on the opening day by winning a high-scoring game at Grampound Road seconds.

Half centuries from Matt Hookway (53), Mark McManus (54no) and Matt Mansbridge (69) set them on their way to an imposing 263-4 before Grampound came up 28 runs short with four wickets left.

Andrew DeRosa backed up his 23 with the bat by taking 2-34 while Mansbridge, Gareth Kruger, Jamie Summers and Matt Williams all bowled tidily.

Holsworthy and South Petherwin warmed up for their clash at Stanhope Park on Saturday by maintaining their unbeaten starts in Division Three East.

Holsworthy eased past an understrength St Austell thirds by six wickets in North Devon.

After bowling the visitors out for 146 which saw three wickets apiece for Jack Greening (3-42) and George Wilcox (3-38) and two for skipper Ryan Walter (2-14), the hosts took their time and won it with 15 balls unused.

Openers Jack May and Aiden Gerry made a big dent in the total by hitting 42 and 36 respectively, before Walter, Matt Shepherd, Greening and Ben Hutchings reached double figures to secure a good win.

Petherwin will travel just three points behind after easing past Tintagel by 123 runs at Kennards House.

After the early loss of Nick Gerry to James Ellis, Cornwall Over 50s duo Adrian Warne (89no) and Paul Clements (80) put on 179 for the second wicket before Clements became the first of three late wickets for Leo McDonnell (3-56).

Petherwin eventually ended on 246-5 with Gareth Clements and Phil Pridham adding some useful late runs.

In reply, David Lane (21) and Ben Jarram (5) put on 31 for the opening wicket before things started to unravel.

Kevin Horrell (4-36) was the main architect while Paul Clements, Adrian Clements and Ollie Peterson all chipped in with two apiece. Only Jason Seldon, with a resilient 37, reached double figures once Lane departed.

Launceston seconds picked up their first win since promotion by winning a low scoring thriller at Lawhitton against an understrength Callington seconds.

Both sides were missing players and the home side chose to bat time after being sent in by Callington skipper Toby Beresford-Power.

Makeshift opener Sam Bunn made an excellent 34 while Ethan Green (21) and David Cox (22no) added useful runs to a total of 143-6 which was boosted by 46 extras.

For Callington, Ashley Small bowled well without luck while Toby Morgan (2-24) and Tom Nevile (3-34) were in the wickets.

Callington’s young side looked to knock the runs off as quickly as possible and it cost them.

Openers Beresford-Power and Jack Meertons and number three Lee Cosgrove were all out within the first six overs attempting big shots off Matt Bloomfield who bowled well for his 5-40 off 12 overs.

However, for as long as James Moon (45) was there, Callington were favourites. But off Bloomfield’s final ball, he attempted a big shot and was bowled.

From there on, Callington failed to keep their nerve as David Sillifant (2-24), Green (2-14) and Bunn (1-10) did the damage to dismiss them for 118 with 59 balls unused.

Bude seconds also recorded their first win since going up as they eased past Boconnoc at Crooklets in a match reduced to 43 overs due to rain.

Jonathan Niblett made 74 in Boconnoc’s 154-4 which was passed with ease thanks to Gordon Wint’s unbeaten 53 and 58 extras.
