Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League scores and report — Saturday, June 1

CALLINGTON pulled off one of their best results in recent years as they shocked previously unbeaten Truro in the ECB Cornwall Premier League at Boscawen Park on Saturday.

After choosing to bat, Callington got off to an excellent start as openers Aidan Libby and Alex Robinson put on 61 before Robinson was dismissed by Neil Ivamy for a run-a-ball 22.

Callington then proceeded to collapse to 126-8 as the left-arm spin of Ivamy (3-15) and Andy Libby (4-33) proved far too good.

However Aidan Libby was playing one of the innings of the season so far and managed to add 32 with number ten Jim Shorten (17no) before Libby was eventually dismissed for 92.

Last man Harry Sawyers, who would later star with the ball, then added a further 15 before he was caught behind off Joel Brierley for three.

Truro’s run chase got off to an even better beginning as they got to 89-1 with Charlie Kent (29), Andy Libby (37) and Tim Wyatt (15) all making contributions.

However the dismissal of Libby — bowled by Sawyers — sparked a massive collapse as they were eventually bowled out for 152.

Sawyers was the man of the moment with 4-30 alongside James Boundy (2-23) before paceman Chris Davies (3-12) cleaned up the tail.

Werrington made it three wins in succession as they demolished a weakened Falmouth at Ladycross in a contest which was all over by 4pm.

Falmouth chose to bat upon winning the toss but were rolled over for 86 in just 24.4 overs.

County paceman Tom Dinnis was the man-of-the-match, taking 5-31 off his nine overs while Australian Jono Baldock managed 2-5 off 3.4 overs after returning from injury.

The hosts knocked off the runs in 15.2 overs with only Matt Robins losing his wicket for a rapid 33.

Adam Hodgson (26no) and Paul Smith (18no) were the unbeaten batsmen.

While the firsts were cruising to victory, a weakened seconds were handed a 245-run defeat at Gorran in County Division One.

Robin Kendall bashed 149 in the coastal club’s massive 401-7 while Rhys Daniel also made 89.

Darren Johns was the pick of the visitors’ attack, taking 3-52 off his ten overs while Ian Searle was also relatively economical in going for 50.

The other 30 overs went for nearly ten an over.

In reply, Werrington were bowled out for 156 in 27.2 overs. Skipper Mark Hodgson thrashing 68 off just 36 balls, but only Johns with 20 provided much support.

Launceston failed to back up their brilliant Bank Holiday weekend by falling to defeat to title-chasing Redruth seconds at Lawhitton, although they will be happy to have picked up maximum bonus points.

Redruth racked up an imposing 294 all out with Luke Johnson top-scoring with 83 while Mark Jenkin (40), George Bolland (46) and Harry Bolland (46) all made forties.

For Launceston, Sam Pengelly picked up 4-59 with Robert Mutch (2-51) and Pete West (2-44) chipping in.

Although they never seriously threatened the target, the hosts batted well to be all out for 233 with eight balls unused.Pengelly backed up his performance with the ball with his first century of the season with 117 off 118 balls, while Brandon Forsyth (27) and Michael Diebner (20) both passed 20.

In Division Two East, Luckett picked up their first win in four attempts after a nailbiting three-wicket win at St Minver.

The hosts got off to a rapid-fire start as openers Ben Hawken (27) and Ryan Pooley (30) put on 59. But from there on, the visitors continued to take wickets at regular intervals to reduce St Minver to 114-6 with only Tom Preston-Evans (21) making any impression.

However Antony Ash (27), Mark Turner (23) and Ross Keast (13no) batted well to get them to 171-8 before they were soon dismissed for 173. Spinner Richard Brown was the key, claiming 5-34 with his off-spin.

The Luckett reply followed a similar pattern to that of the North Cornwall side.

Openers Richard Brown (16) and Luke Brenton put on 56 in no time with Brenton crashing 40 off just 24 balls.

However the introduction of Pooley, Turner and Harry Hambly changed the course of the game as they collapsed to 110-6.

But wicketkeeper Marc Brown showed a cool head to make an unbeaten 30 from number seven with Mark Southcott (15) and Jonathan Hoskin (10no) providing the support.

Former Cornwall batsmen Adam Cocking showed no mercy to the Bude bowling attack as he walloped 162 off just 98 balls in Newquay’s 156-run win at Crooklets.

The number three put on 195 for the second wicket with Michael Harding (98) before powering on to his first century of the season in their 356-7.

Jack Horwell benefitted from Newquay’s late charge by claiming his maiden five-wicket haul with 5-53 off six overs.

Bude’s reply was steady as they picked up maximum batting points to end on 200-7.

Openers Matt Hookway (30) and Matt Williams (40) put on 60 together before skipper Mark McManus glued the rest of the innings together with 45.

Holsworthy are still the only team in the Post area to have won all their fixtures in 2019 after annihilating Callington seconds at Moores Park.

The Division Three East leaders rolled through the hosts for just 92 in 19.4 overs with Callington’s last seven wickets falling for just 30.

Andrew Brenton top-scored with 29 while of the rest, Toby Beresford-Power and Tom Hughes were the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Opening bowlers Matt Shepherd (2-45) and Jack Greening (3-30) shared five wickets with Rob Mitchell sneaking in with 4-15 off just 2.4 overs at the end.

Although Holsworthy lost Jack May to Martin Hunn for just 4, Aiden Gerry (35no) and Ryan Walter (43no) ensured there were no further alarms as they extended their lead over St Blazey to 24 points.

St Blazey picked up a 19-point win after easing past South Petherwin by eight wickets.

After choosing to bat, Petherwin were restricted to just 143-9 off their 45 overs.

Nick Gerry made a patient 51 with another 51 coming through extras.

In reply, St Blazey chose to see of the accurate duo of Paul Clements and Michael Searle before making hay against the change bowlers and eased to victory.

Opener Paul Carne carried his bat for 71 while Mark Trudgeon (26) and Adam Thomas both supported.

Adrian Clements and Taylor Gerry each managed a wicket.

It was a bad day for the Post area teams at the other end of the table with Bude seconds, Tintagel and Launceston all losing away from home.

Bude chose to field upon winning the toss at Roche but were made to regret that decision against their fellow strugglers as the hosts knocked up 281-6.

Veterans Mark Whitefield (2-33) and Mike Taylor (3-44) managed 5-77 between them off 23 overs but the other 22 went for 204.

After losing their openers cheaply, Bude sensibly decided to bat out the overs and look for bonus points, ending up on 153-5. Matt Whitefield made 54 not out with Derek Piper adding 44.

Launceston let slip a big chance at Boconnoc before going down to a 49-run defeat at Deer Park.

After winning the toss, Launceston captain Matt Bloomfield (3-33) bowled Jamie Coates with the first ball of the game before he and David Cox reduced them to 54-4.

But from there on, Boconnoc fought back as Will Geach (49) and Jason Doney (51no) put on 92 for the fifth wicket.

Doney carried his bat as they ended on 215-6.

Launceston were confident of their chances at tea but got off to a horror start as they fell to 26-5. David Sillifant (25) and Jake Barber (14) then added 41 together before another mini collapse saw them fold to 76-8.

However the hard-hitting Mark Forshaw and Bloomfield (27) then added 74 for the ninth wicket in just 9.2 overs to spark hopes of the most dramatic victories.

Once Bloomfield was dismissed, Forshaw brought up his second half-century in as many games with a flurry of boundaries before he was eventually dismissed for 60 with 16 overs unused.

Tintagel picked up four points as they lost by seven wickets at St Neot.

Skipper Jordan Burnard led from the front with 64 in their 178-9 and was supported by 30 from Simon Fry and double-figure scores from Chris Lovegrove (19) and David Lane (16).

Although Jason Seldon and James Ellis each bagged an early wicket, St Neot were led home by half centuries from Mark Pearce (55no), Liam Jones (62) and Les Harrison’s unbeaten 17.

Werrington continue to lead Division Four East after overcoming a tough-looking test at Saltash St Stephens.

As many as four regulars were up in the seconds but it didn’t matter as Nick Ward showed his undoubted class.

Opening the batting, he made 86 in their 181-4, and was well supported by Martin Wills (19), Jack Gribble (14) and Ian Wills (33no).

With the ball he claimed 4-22 off 8.2 overs as he Gribble (3-38) and Daniel Howgill did the business in dismissing them for 152.

Luckett seconds picked up their second win of the season after beating their Gorran counterparts by 193 runs at Chapel Field (see right).

Delabole’s own problems continued as they made the trip into Devon to take on Buckland Monachorum with just seven.

However the hosts generously gave them two spare to let the game go ahead.

Delabole were sent into bat and managed 97 all out in 32 overs, 57 of which came from the in-form Glen Burrell.

Buckland are searching from back-to-back promotions but were made to work hard as they lost five wickets getting them.

Shane Trewin and skipper Adrian Pooley each bowled ten overs, taking 2-54 and 3-28 respectively.

In Division Five East, Milton Abbot moved into mid-table after a ten-wicket win over Tideford seconds at Baxter Park.

Tideford reached 183-5 off their 40 overs, 75 of which came from Duncan Nobes.

However that proved to be in vain as the experienced Paul Crocker and Richard Baxter batted from start to finish, Crocker making 67 and Baxter 103.

South Petherwin seconds were handed a nine-wicket defeat at the hands of St Blazey twos at Kennards House.

Petherwin could only muster 124 with James Cawsey continuing his fine recent form with 51 while Roger Gerry made 25.

Antony Best’s unbeaten 84 guided the visitors home.

St Minver seconds were made to work hard by Launceston thirds before earning a four-wicket win at Lawhitton in Division Six East.

Launceston chose to bat and scored 199-5 off their 40 overs as openers Lois Thornton (75no) and Lewis Matthews (70) made hay. Sam Hocking (2-39) and Russell Donnelly (2-58) each took two wickets.

Despite missing star openers Jake Keast and Matt Gilbert, St Minver’s batsmen got stuck in with skipper Karl Daly leading the way with 48 while Donnelly (35), Andy Rathborne (29) and Charlie Edwards (20no) all contributed. Emma Barnes (2-34) and Brett Grosvenor (2-36) shared four dismissals.

Gunnislake remain fourth after easing to a 169-run win over St Stephen seconds.

Gunnislake declared on 246-4 off 31.2 overs with opener Andrew Morris retiring on 106 and twins David and Adam Emmerson adding 38 and 45 respectively.

Opening bowlers Sylvan Pook (3-11) and Paul Less (3-6) then shared six wickets as St Stephen were dismissed for 77.

Liskeard’s Andrew Cobb kept up his ridiculous record of not being out yet this season as they eased to a nine-wicket success at Werrington fourths.

Home skipper Nigel Dennis carried his bat for 86 in Werrington’s 217-8 but the total was knocked off with ease as new signing Andrew Ware made an unbeaten 110 alongside Cobb (58), who went to 516 runs from just four games this term.

Tintagel got close before eventually falling short by 22 runs to Menheniot-Looe thirds at Butts Field.

The visitors made 212-2 with Tintagel replying with 190-8.

Tintagel’s runs were made by Tom Harris (50) and Richard Pethick (47) while Phil Higgs also chipped in with 19.
