Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores
WERRINGTON’S hopes of defending their ECB Cornwall Premier League title suffered another big blow on Saturday as they fell to an eight-run defeat at St Austell.
Unlike a lot of the other games in the East of the county, the weather had no effect with the hosts making 165-7 off their 50 overs.
Werrington were without Adam Hodgson due to the impending birth of his third child and Tom Dinnis, but it didn’t matter initially as off-spinners Matt Robins (4-13) and Ben Smeeth (2-15) combined to reduce the hosts to 97-7 despite Hugh Parkinson’s 37.
However skipper Gary Bone (38no) was joined by Matt Lloyd (26no) to add an unbeaten 68 and ensure a tricky chase on a wicket perfect for the home spin attack.
Although Nick Lawson was dismissed second ball by Chris Harris, Werrington advanced to 76-2 before set batsmen Smeeth (32) and Mark Gribble (21) both departed in quick succession.
Skipper Paul Smith (23), Adam Jenkin (10), Jono Baldock (13) and Dan Barnard (20) all got in, but the visitors kept losing wickets in clusters, eventually falling eight short.
Harris ended with 5-62 while the Bone brothers — Gary and Michael — shared four wickets.
The defeat left them 27 points off leaders Penzance ahead of Wadebridge’s visit to Ladycross on Saturday (1pm).
Callington were left to curse their luck after a scintillating bowling performance saw them reduce leaders Redruth to 44-9 before the game was called off.
A delayed start saw the game reduced to 45 overs per side but after 22.5 overs the game was seemingly over as a contest. After openers Toby Whiteford (8) and James Harris (11) put on 18, Aidan Libby (4-16) initiated a remarkable collapse as eight wickets fell for just 26, three of which went to Harry Sawyers (3-5).
But with Callington anticipating the most remarkable of results, the rain set in, this time for good to leave the Reds to head back down the A30 knowing they got away with one.
In County Division One, Kevin Worth’s heroics proved just in vain as Launceston fell to the most dramatic of defeats at Lanhydrock — losing by just a run.
The visitors had half of their first choice side missing and it showed as Lanhydrock made 161 all out in their 25 overs after the game got underway three hours late due to showers and a wet outfield.
Opening bowlers Robert Mutch (3-2) and Sam Pengelly shared eight wickets for just 20 off 9.4 overs but the rest of the inexperienced attack were hit to all parts.
Launceston slid to 36-4 in reply but with Pengelly and Worth at the crease, they had a chance.
Pengelly was caught for 22 at 86-5, leaving Worth to guide an inexperienced tail.
Although the last five batsmen just managed eight between them, Worth went into overdrive — targeting the short boundaries at will.
Needing 26 off the last over, Worth (84no off 52) thrashed James Maycock for a pair of huge maximums and a boundary to bring the equation down. However, Maycock just about kept his nerve to end a classic.
Werrington seconds were thankful to the weather at Ladycross as Helston required 51 with nine wickets intact when the game was abandoned.
The overnight rain and showers meant the game started late with 40 overs per side.
Helston won a crucial toss and West Indian Dario Cumberbatch claimed 5-22 off his eight overs to reduce Werrington to 33-5.
Sam Hockin showed his class to make 38 as he and Mark Taylor (12) added 34. However the last four wickets could only muster 27 as the hosts were dismissed for 94.
Hockin (1-17) then dismissed key man Karl Leathley for a four-ball duck but William Jenkin (11no) and Justin Matthews (22no) were still there when the heavens opened once more.
Bude seconds made it back-to-back away victories with a five-wicket victory at Saltash Town in Division Two East.
Matt Williams kept up his fine recent form with 4-24 as Town were held to 190-8 off their 45 overs, 72 of which came from opener Mark Hutchings.
Although Warren Rumble (4) and Mark McManus (9) went cheaply, Matt Hookway (39), Andrew De Rosa (52) and Williams (46) did the damage as Bude got home with 12 balls to spare.
Luckett’s improvement continues as they beat high-flying Wadebridge seconds at Chapel Field in a 33-over fixture.
Poor weather meant the wicket wasn’t a typical belter and it showed as Wadebridge dismissed the hosts for just 122 with Leion Cole and Luke Brenton each making thirties.
However Luckett’s bowling attack against proved their worth, bowling the visitors out for just 74.
Jonny Hoskin had the brilliant figures of four for seven off nine overs while Richard Brown (3-19) and Mark Southcott (2-13) claimed 5-32 off 17 overs between them.
St Minver would have been confident at the halfway stage against leaders Newquay before a poor batting performance cost them dear.
Dennis Brown (4-44) and Hamish Rathbone (4-45) each bowled well in their 11-over spells as Newquay made 201-9 off their 45 overs.
In reply, Minver limped to 44 all out in just 20 overs with only Tom Preston-Evans (14) and Steve Hawke (10) reaching double figures.
Holsworthy are 39 points clear of second-placed St Blazey in Division Three East after the rain stopped Blazey in their tracks at bottom side Launceston seconds.
Just 8.1 overs were possible at Lawhitton before the rain curtailed proceedings, with the visitors 13-0, and Holsworthy took advantage, easing past 10-man Boconnoc by eight wickets.
Jack Greening made it 15 wickets in three games and 30 for the season in just ten fixtures, with 4-13 off 10.1 overs as Boconnoc were bowled out for 103.
Holsworthy needed just 18.2 overs to knock off their target, with Shepherd whacking five sixes and three fours in his unbeaten 48. Jack May (23) and Ryan Walter (19no) also contributed.
Callington seconds are now 14 points off St Blazey after overcoming their Roche counterparts by 24 runs at Trezaize Road.
Skipper Toby Beresford-Power led the way for the visitors with 42 while Peter Tancock added 25 in their 121 all out.
Adam Snowdon (3-12) and Martin Hunn (3-26) then shared six wickets as Roche collapsed to just 97 all out.
At the bottom, Bude seconds are nine points off safety after losing by seven wickets at home to Newquay seconds.
After choosing to bat, Bude made 163-9 with extras top-scoring with 47. Charlie Gliddon made 41 while Adam Williams chipped in with 21.
In response, Newquay cruised to victory, with half centuries from Aaron Hawken (55) and Chris Jordan (51no).
Tintagel fell to a seventh defeat in ten starts after falling to a disappointing defeat at St Austell thirds.
Jason Seldon (4-30) and Sean Keeble (4-50) shared eight wickets as the hosts were bowled out for just 157.
But Tintagel made just 100, Simon Harrison top-scoring with 29.
South Petherwin and St Neot was rained off without a ball being bowled.
It was a bad day at Delabole for the hosts after failing to pick up a single bonus point against Saltash St Stephens. They were dismissed for just 36 before Saltash knocked off the score in 11.4 overs.
Werrington thirds needed 40 with six wickets in-hand when rain curtailed their clash with Luckett seconds at Ladycross.
Luckett made 111-5 off their 36 overs with extras accounting for 36 of those runs. Richard Seeley top-scored with an unbeaten 17. Opening bowlers Freddie Ward (2-24) and Nick Oldaker (2-18) shared four wickets.
Veteran seamer Alan Skeet ran through the Werrington top-order with 3-26 before skipper Dan Jenkin (34no) and Richard Stanbury (22) started to get on top of the bowling. Stanbury’s dismissal to Seeley was the last ball of the contest.
Milton Abbot welcomed Newquay in Division Five East and after a see-saw contest would have been disappointed not to win.
Milton Abbot were held to 100-7 off their 30 overs with opener Richard Baxter (47) making almost half.
Tom Rickard (3-17) and Simon Glossop (2-23) ran through the Newquay top-order before skipper Sam Millatt (32) and Martin Yelland (20no) guided them home.
South Petherwin were defeated at Pencarrow agaainst Wadebridge thirds.
James Cawsey made 42 in their 179 all out while Michael Clements (29), Adrian Martin (28) and Billy Martin (25) all passed 20. However, Steve Meneer crashed 110 not out as Wadebridge romped home.
In the basement division, leaders St Minver seconds saw off nearest challengers Liskeard with ease.
All six batsmen reached double figures in their 236-4 off 40 overs with Matt Gilbert (67) and Sam Hocking (58) both passing 50.
In response, Liskeard dangerman Andrew Cobb could only get 17 as they were dismissed for 167. Veterans Nigel Hocking (3-28) and Russell Donnelly (3-10) shared six wickets.
Werrington fourths’ trip to mid-Cornwall to take on St Stephen seconds was over in just 22 overs after bowling the hosts out for just 36.
Tony Scown took 3-0 from five overs while James Turner (3-14) and Steve Pike (3-15) were also in fine form.
Nigel Dennis and Daniel Howgill then knocked off the runs in just 6.3 overs.
Two Post area clubs battled it out at Butts Field as Tintagel seconds eased to victory over Gunnislake.
Gunnislake meandered to 120 all out in 39 overs with only lower order batsmen Brian Martin (30) and George Jefferis (26) reaching double figures. Opening bowler Tom Harris led the honours with 4-20 off his teen with Alex Gibbons going for just seven off his ten and picking up a wicket in the process.
In response, Harris (33) and Richard Pethick (37) batted sensibly before Stephen Roach (18no) and Aaron Washer (15no) supplied the finishing touches.
Launceston thirds’ game at Boconnoc was abandoned with the visitors reaching 74-2 off 16.3 overs. Lewis Matthews was unbeaten on 43.
