Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores

CALLINGTON are 12 points clear are of Falmouth in the race to avoid finishing bottom in the ECB Cornwall Premier League despite falling to a 53-run defeat at Redruth on Saturday.

Overnight rain meant the match was reduced to 40 overs per side, but Callington crucially won the toss and stuck the Reds in.

Redruth were reduced to 32-3 with key batsmen Toby Whiteford and Christian Purchase falling for ducks.

Callington continued to make inroads and at 113-6 were right in the game.

However Peter Howells’ 24 plus 17 apiece from Lloyd Brock, Craig Johnson and Piran Kent got them up to 180-9, which proved far too many.

West Indian spinner Yannick Leonard was the star of the show with 3-22 off eight overs while James Boundy took 4-45 from seven.

Callington’s batting has been their big problem this year and at 17-4 the game was all but done.

Nick Parker (18) and Joe White (14) added 33 but they soon fell to 66-7.

Needing 100 just to get a bonus point, Oliver Allsop showed his promise by stroking eight fours and a six in his 50 off 58 balls to get them up to 127 all out.

Paul Smith struck his first league century of the season as Werrington cemented third place in the table with a convincing 84-run win over an understrength St Austell at Ladycross.

After losing opener Adam Hodgson in the third over, Smith then came to the wicket and smashed the bowling to all parts. Such was the rate he scored, he made 70 of an 86-run partnership with Adam Jenkin who made 5.

By the time he was out at 152-4, he had contributed 115 off just 98 balls (15 fours and five sixes).

The rest of the innings was dominated by Mark Gribble. The right-hander struck 48 off just 53 balls as spinners Gary Bone (5-30) and James Carter (1-11) took 6-63 off their combined 20 overs. Werrington eventually ended on 239-9.

St Austell set off slowly before losing four quick wickets to make it 36-4. From there on, Bone (48no) who enjoyed a brilliant match, received handy support from Niall Parkinson (18), Liam Watson (14) and Nick Matthews (26) as they ended on 155-8, denying their hosts maximum points.

Jono Baldock was the star with the ball, taking 3-24 off his nine overs while spinners Hodgson (1-20) and Matt Robins (2-31) were also in the wickets.

Their was a disastrous day for Werrington seconds at Helston as they recorded the lowest score of the season in County Division One to remain deep in trouble.

Thankfully for stand-in skipper Ben Jenkin, they won the toss and were able to bowl their hosts out for 165. Cameron Wakefield (3-41) and Nick Ward (3-33) shared six of the wickets to fall while Darren Johns went for just 16 off his ten overs and snared key man Karl Leathley.

But even the most ardent Helston supporter would never have guessed what happened after tea, as Werrington were shot out for just 29 in 22.5 overs.

Seven of the runs were extras while the top score was five made by John Moon and Johns.

Dario Cumberbatch took 4-14 off ten overs while Steve Eddy weighed in with 3-7.

Launceston are all but safe ahead of the derby at Werrington on Saturday as they thrashed Lanhydrock by seven wickets at Lawhitton.

As is often the case, Sam Pengelly did the damage, claiming the remarkable figures of nine overs, seven maidens, six for six as the Bodmin-based visitors crumbled for just 72 in 30.1 overs.

Robert Mutch (2-29) and Peter West (2-20) provided excellent support.

Any chance of an incredible away win were soon put to bed as Mutch made a run-a-ball 42.

He added 52 with fellow opener Michael Bolt (10) before Dan Tilley (13no) saw the job through and put them 38 points clear with 60 to play for.

Elsewhere in the relegation battle, Ludgvan are 21 points clear after easing past St Austell seconds by 131 runs while Werrington did at least make up four points on Gorran after the coastal club lost by ten wickets at home to Camborne after being dismissed for just 66.

In Division Two East, St Minver picked up nine points in their quest to avoid the drop despite losing at home to runaway leaders Newquay.

The visitors racked up an imposing 280-8. Openers Joe Crane (88) and Michael Harding (72) smashed the bowling to all parts in a stand of 152 before Julian Dimas and Ben Retallack (23no) contributed in a total of 280-8. Dennis Brown was the leading wicket taker with 3-77.

The Minver reply got off to a decent start as Ryan Pooley (48) and Antony Ash (25) added 66 before Ash and Andy Rathborne both went in consecutive balls to Tom Eggins (3-47).

Pooley was caught and bowled for 48 by Eggins at 94-3, and although Tom Preston-Evans (26), Allistair Cottle (26) and Steve Hawke (34) all got in, a failure for anyone to push on meant they were bowled out for 200 with four overs to go.

Bude are up to fourth after a six-wicket win at home to Saltash Town, who are now just two points clear of St Minver in the race for survival.

After winning the toss, Saltash knocked up 230-6 thanks to 94 from David Bolland and handy contributions from Blaise Eigenmann (38) and Chris Simpson (48). Jack Horwell (3-62) and Matt Williams (2-57) shared five wickets.

The home reply was a team affair as skipper Mark McManus’ unbeaten 55 allowed Thomas Hall (38), Williams (47) and Andrew De Rosa (41) to provide the acceleration.

Luckett are 21 points clear of the bottom two with three games to go after a 58-run defeat at Wadebridge seconds.

In a match reduced to 36 overs, Leion Cole (2-24) struck twice early on but Wadebridge rallied to 196-7 thanks to half-centuries from the father and son duo of Neil (55) and Sam Richards (74) and a quick 31 from Jonathan Centini.

Luckett got to 47-2 when Luke Brenton was bowled for 28, and from there on only Jonathan Hoskin really got stuck in. Hoskin was the last man out for 52 in a total of 138 as Neil Meneer took 4-31.

Holsworthy’s lead at the top of the table in Division Three East is now down to just four points after suffering a third successive defeat, this time by nine wickets at mid-table Boconnoc.

After losing the toss ‘the Trees’, were held to 186-8 off their 45 overs with Sam Stacey (36) and Ryan Walter (33no) the only two to pass 30.

Boconnoc have the league’s highest run-scorer in John Niblett (981), and he made an unbeaten 71 as he and skipper Michael Blake (56no) put on an unbroken 123 for the second wicket after Jason Doney was bowled by Walter for 21.

St Blazey are now within touching distance after a 57-run win over Launceston seconds, who drop to the bottom.

The visitors won the toss and chose to field and did well to restrict the hosts to 201-8 with Ethan Green (3-56), David Cox (2-46) and Brett Grosvenor in the wickets.

Launceston’s reply started slowly against the excellent Keith Reid (0-19 off 11) and Ian Chambers (3-38) but got to 50-1 before Phil Spry was bowled by Adam Thomas for 25.

Darren Jenkin played positively for his 24 and although David Sillifant held the rest of the innings together with 31, they collapsed to be bowled out for a disappointing 147 with 16 balls unused. Andy Thomas backed up his game-changing unbeaten 35 with 4-21.

Launceston are four points behind their Bude counterparts after the coastal club lost by seven wickets at Newquay seconds.

Bude made 164-9 off their 45 overs with Nick Sainbury top-scoring with 40, while Gordon Wint (29) and Matt Whitefield (24) also got in.

However they had no answer with the ball as home skipper Tommy Rodda whacked the bowling to all parts in his 83 off 72 balls which included eight fours and six sixes.

Although Mark Whitefield (1-27 off nine) dismissed him at 116-2, Matt Millward (28no) and Rob Burton (13no) saw Newquay home.

Callington seconds lost for the fourth time in five starts at home to Roche who moved up to fourth bottom, five ahead of Launceston.

An unbeaten half century from number seven William Harvey (50no) plus 50 extras saw Roche reach 166-7 off their 45 overs. Ashley Small (2-34) and Harry Southcott (2-20) shared four wickets.

Despite having a strong top order, Lucie Oakley (3-32) and Dean Jeffery (2-41) reduced Callington to 17-4 before Andrew Brenton hit out to make 50.

However when he when he went at 89-7 and Small departed for nine, the game looked up. Southcott hit out to make 35 but he was caught off Oakley to see them lose by eight runs.

South Petherwin did Roche, Launceston and Bude a big favour by hammering St Neot by 109 runs at Wenmouth.

Petherwin totalled 194-5 with Cornwall Over 50s skipper Paul Clements making 76. Taylor Gerry and Adam Warne weighed in with 46 not out and 35 respectively as they once again recovered from an early wobble.

The hosts were then dismantled by Caleb Forsyth (4-26) and Clements (2-28) before Kevin Horrell ran through the tail on his way to figures of 3-5.

Tintagel made it five wins on the spin by thrashing St Austell thirds by ten wickets in a match that lasted less than 27 overs.

Bowling unchanged, Jason Seldon (7-24 off 9.4) and James Ellis (3-17 off nine) dismissed the stunned visitors for just 42.

Leo McDonnell (13) and Ben Lane (28no) then knocked the runs off in 9.1 overs.

The final day of the regular season in Division Four East takes place on Saturday with Werrington thirds needing a favour to gain promotion.

Although they beat Luckett seconds by three wickets at Chapel Field, they could only pick up 17 points while Saltash St Stephens earned all 20 at home to Delabole.

Luckett were held to 146-7 off their 40 overs with Patrick Thompson top-scoring with 38.

Four of Werrington’s five-man attack picked up wickets with Nick Oldaker (2-28) and James Adams (2-6 off 6) the best.

Martin Budge (2-25) set alarm bells ringing when he dismissed Trevor Dingle and James Adams early on.

Toby Ward (17), Simon Bishop (25), Daniel Jenkin (33) and Richard Stanbury (17) all got in without going on, meaning 30 were required with three wickets in-hand.

However Oldaker’s brilliant game continued as he smashed three sixes in his unbeaten 27 to see them over the line. Steve Brown took 3-20 with his off-spin.

Saltash St Stephens eased past Delabole by 95 runs to go top of the table by a point from Werrington.

Justin Hemmings (68) and Scott Brown (52no) both made half centuries in their 219-6, which was boosted by a rapid 44 from Alex Johnson. Michael Barrett (2-22) and Henning Kaaber (3-55) shared five wickets.

Delabole’s reply got off to a good start through openers Aaron Vercoe (17) and Barrett (43), but once they departed, only Drew Burnard with 26 reached double figures as Johnson (5-38) and Nick Hewlett (3-23) proved too tough to handle.

Elsewhere, Bugle who have a game in-hand on the rest of the league along with Lanhydrock, beat Lanhydrock by eight wickets to move up to third. They know that 22 points from their final two games will secure promotion.

Saltash St Stephens go to Buckland Monachorum knowing that all 20 points means they go up. If Buckland win and Werrington win at home to Duloe, Werrington are promoted. But if Buckland win well and deny Saltash many bonus points and Werrington lose, it will be Buckland celebrating.

In Division Five East, both Milton Abbot and South Petherwin both fell to defeat.

Milton Abbot made the long trip to promotion-chasing Newquay thirds and nearly pulled off a shock with ten men, before going down by five runs.

Piran Rolls (4-47), Richard Baxter (3-23) and Nathan Patrick (2-14) were amongst the wickets as Newquay made just 118. However, Newquay are second for a reason and won despite Milton Abbot reaching 69-1 thanks to Baxter’s 36. Simon Glossop made 29 but they fell just short.

South Petherwin’s final home match saw them go down by six wickets at home to Wadebridge thirds. Adrian Martin’s 54 was the best in a total of 164, which the visitors managed easily.

Although Michael Searle bowled tight (2-31 off ten), Carl Jeffery’s 75 was enough.

Records tumbled at Gunnislake on Saturday as Aaron Washer hit the second highest score in Cornwall this season and the first double century in the history of Tintagel seconds as they won by 228 runs at a depleted Gunnislake in Division Six East.

Washer’s record-breaking 249 not out included 21 fours and seven sixes as the visitors racked up a massive 334-1.

Remarkably, Sylvan Pook bowled his ten overs for just 19 as Richard Pethick (25) and Martin Seldon (31no) enjoyed the best views in the house.

Gunnislake managed just 104-9 with Adam Emmerson (28) and Dave Knowles (23no) the only batsmen to pass 20. Ollie Beaumont (3-12), David Lane (3-19) and Peter Ellis (2-37) shared eight wickets.

Elsewhere, St Minver picked up the two points required for the title without having to step on the field as their clash with second-placed Liskeard was cancelled due to the weather. The heavy Friday rain also saw Launceston thirds’ home game with Boconnoc seconds called off.

Werrington fourths thrashed St Stephen seconds by seven wickets at Ladycross to sit fifth.

Gareth Cox (4-27) and Brian Baker (3-9) did most of the damage as the visitors reached 127 before Dan Howgill (42) and Nick Wills (26no) saw them over the line.
