Cornwall Cricket League Division Four and Five East round-up – Saturday, August 9

WERRINGTON Thirds’ scratch side produced a superb performance before going down by just three runs to fellow promotion-hopefuls Duloe on Saturday.

With the first and second teams missing plenty, Werrington travelled with an unfamiliar looking side and looked set for a long afternoon when home openers Aaron Conway (36) and James Wimpress (35) added 50 in the first four overs.

But after they departed, Werrington fought back to dismiss the hosts for 196 with veteran off-spinners Ben Sonley (4-29) and Paul Miller (3-21) sharing seven wickets.

Miller then made a superb 75 in the chase and with Matt Chatfield (16), Henry Paynter (22) and Gareth Cox (11) in the runs, they were favourites until a late collapse saw the hosts go second, three points ahead of Werrington.

In Division Five East, St Minver Seconds are 28 points behind third bottom Pencarrow following an eight-wicket defeat at their mid-table Launceston counterparts.

After finding it tough going against Peter West (0-31) and the returning Brett Grosvenor (2-17), Josh Sanders’ 59 from just 29 balls saw them reach 121 before he was the third wicket to fall in the 30th over, that after twenties from Neil Kent (20) and Charlie Edwards (26).

But St Minver did manage to get up to 179-7 despite 4-44 from Phil Spry.

Spry (14) and Dave Chapman (15) also found it tough early on against Nigel Hocking (1-27) and Sanders (1-43), but Liam Tilley (65no) and Glyn Hutchings (63no) tucked into the change bowlers in an eight-wicket victory.

Holsworthy Seconds were thrashed by eight wickets by visiting Gunnislake.

The best of their 116 all out was 30 and 29 from Adam Lovejoy and Jack May respectively, before Gunni raced to victory in just 18.3 overs thanks to Sam Graber (60no) and Dan Pethick (42).
