MENHENIOT-LOOE and Launceston had the most to smile about after the end of the 2019-20 Indoor Cricket League, run by Tideford Cricket Club at Lux Park, taking place on every second Sunday throughout the winter between eight teams.

The aim is to provide competitive cricket in a relaxed, fun environment, and many clubs used the opportunity to bring on their youngsters.

The youth of Menheniot-Looe, who had not won an indoor league game in two years, came of age to top the table, only losing to eventual runners-up Roche. Launceston and St Neot finished third and fourth respectively.

The Cup produced some exciting games. Roche managed the double over Menheniot-Looe to win their semi-final and set up a final against Launceston, who had beaten St Neot in their last-four clash.

In the final, Roche batted first, with James Cole and James Hunkin scoring 30 not out and 47 respectively to finish on 120 off their 12 overs.

In reply, Launceston looked to be cruising to victory, having smashed 82 off the first six overs, but Roche had other ideas, taking the odd wicket and slowing down the run rate.

When the returning Kevin Worth and Rob Mutch both lost their wickets, they found themselves five down, with young Shane Davey left to try and guide them to victory. He did so with an over spare, to the great relief of his team-mates.

St Stephens beat Lanhydrock in the Plate final, despite Chris Rogers and Jamie Eldridge both retiring having scored 25-plus runs, as St Stephens managed to restrict the rest of Lanhydrock’s youngsters to the modest total of 90 for two off 12 overs, and then comfortably chased down the total, without loss, with 10 balls remaining. Justin Hemmings, James Blackmore and Alex Johnson all scored 25-plus runs.

Tideford would like to thank all participating clubs for their support and playing the game in the right spirit; Lux Park for supplying an excellent venue; and regular umpires Mark Swain and Andrew Lockett.
