WERRINGTON will head into the 2019 LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League season with plenty of stability at the top end of the club following their annual general meeting on Monday, November 5.

The Ladycross outfit enjoyed an outstanding summer. The first team won the ECB Cornwall Premier League title in Paul Smith’s debut season in charge while the seconds under the guidance of Mark Hodgson — who only played in County Division One due to the league kicking St Minver and Ludgvan out of the league before the season started — finished in a remarkable fifth place with ten wins from their 22 games, three of which were lost to the weather.

The thirds unsurprisingly found it tough in Division Three East and ended up third from bottom and are likely to be placed in the league below when the divisions are released later this month while the fourths — despite finishing sixth in Division Five East — were relegated after losing a play-off with South Petherwin seconds.

The bottom leagues have been restructured and will consist of ten teams meaning four less games and no April or September cricket for those in Division Four and below.

The club continues to go from strength to strength as highlighted by an ever-growing youth section, and they even had the privilege of hosting the cross-Tamar derby between Cornwall and Devon in the Unicorns Championship which saw the home side win by six wickets in the last session.

Chairman Richard Jenkin is in optimistic mood.

He said: “The evening went really well. The first and second team captains are the same, Dan Jenkin is the new third team captain and will be aided by Nick Oldaker. Nigel Dennis has agreed to take on the fourths, following Nick Wills who’s done 14 consecutive years as captain of the fourths and fifths.”

Club legends Trevor Dingle and Keith Moore have also been given extra responsibility.

Jenkin continued: “Selection wise we’ve appointed Trevor Dingle as chairman of selectors and we’ve appointed Keith (Bod) Moore as well. It is hoped that Bod will bring a no-nonsense approach to the job.

“The selection committee is made up of the four captains and two independent selectors.”

Away from the playing side, things remain unchanged.

He said: “Paul Hicks will be the president for a second year while Liz Hodgson was elected as president-elect and will succeed Paul in 12 months time.

“All of the captains turned up, including Smithy [Paul Smith] who came down from Birmingham for it. He thanked the committee for their support during his first year as captain and he is full of enthusiasm and is already ahead to next season.

“We also held a general discussion about the teams for next year, although we had a very successful year both on and off the pitch. Everybody is already looking forward to the start of the 2019 season.”
