LWC?Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, June 30

LAUNCESTON?Cricket Club’s first team picked up their opening win of the season in County Division One after picking a 57-run victory over St Erme at Lawhitton.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Kevin Worth’s men racked up a big score of 265 with Robert Mutch’s 79 off just 56 balls the highlight.

Contributions from Dan Tilley (35), Gavin Wallis (32), Sam Pengelly (28) and Worth himself (22) set up the innings before they were bowled out with 11 balls unused.

In reply, Peter West (2-52) trapped Samuel Townsend leg before wicket second ball, and although Luc Lombard led the way with 51, wickets fell regularly throughout the innings with West, Mutch (2-35), Pengelly (2-32) and Matt Davey (2-30) all taking two apiece to move to within 16 points of second bottom Gorran, who have played a game more.

The other fixture in the division involving a Post area team was at Ladycross as Troon thrashed Werrington seconds by ten wickets.

After winning their last three matches to sit solidly in mid-table, the hosts were blown away for just 88 in 24.2 overs as only Ben Jenkin (17), Danny Warne (14) and Ian Searle (13) reached double figures.

Troon knocked off the runs inside ten overs with Dan Jenkin unbeaten on 54.

It wasn’t a good day for Werrington’s first team either as they lost their crucial clash at defending champions Truro by nine wickets.

Openers Adam Hodgson (16) and Ben Smeeth (49) put on 24 but it soon went downhill as Indian overseas star Faiz Fazal took 5-40 to bowl the visitors out for just 118, a total which included 27 from the last wicket pair of Smeeth and Daniel Barnard (13 not out).

Truro knocked it off for the loss of just one wicket with only Matthew Robins making a breakthrough.

There was much to cheer about for Callington as they picked up their second win of the season with a tense three-wicket success over Grampound Road at Moores Park.

The visitors could only make 147 all out in just 37.4 overs despite reaching 66-1 when Sri Lankan overseas star Ravindra Karunarathna was dismissed for just 15.

Spinner Harry Swayers was the star of the show, taking 5-23 off his 8.4 overs.

Callington looked comfortable in reaching 84-2 with skipper Aidan Libby making 37. However once new South African overseas player Rashard Fuller, who is the son of legendary Proteas batsman Herschelle, was out for 19, the hosts fell to 118-6.

However Toby May (25 not out) kept his cool to move to within six points of fourth bottom Wadebridge.

In Division Two, Luckett kept the pressure on leaders Bude with a massive 167-run victory over Callington seconds in the local derby at the Chapel Field.

Andrew Hoskin led the way with 105 while half centuries from Luke Brenton (58) and Leion Cole (50) propelled them up to 292.

The visitors were all out for just 125 with only Alex Robinson (37) and Paul Voyzey (30) passing 20. Brenton (4-26) and Matthew Shapland (3-51) were the main wicket-takers.

Bude’s batsmen didn’t have it all their own way at home to Newquay seconds as they reached 183-9 from their 45 overs with Mark McManus’ 44 the best.

Although Newquay got off to a good start, spinner Matthew Williams made it back-to-back four-wicket hauls with 4-25 and Mark Peck chipped in with 3-45 as the visitors were dismissed for 131.

There was run-fest at St Minver as St Austell seconds left North Cornwall with a 41-run victory after posting 304-5.

Only Nigel Hocking (1-47 off 11 overs) kept a lid on the run-rate on a typical batting paradise for the home side, but they went close to chasing it.

Openers Ben Hawken (70) and Warwick Rhode (112) put on 125 for the first wicket but regular wickets fell as they were all out for 263 with nine balls remaining.

In Division Three East, Werrington thirds earned a vital victory over St Neot at Ladycross with Nick Ward the star of the show.

The hosts, who were nearly at full-strength for the first time this season, racked up an imposing 298-8 with Ward’s 107 the highlight. Ward (4-28) and Tony Scown (4-52) did the damage as St Neot were all out with 50 still to get.

Tintagel’s tough season continues as Saltash Town left Butts Field with a 102-run victory after posting 281-7, while South Petherwin eased past Holsworthy by seven wickets in pursuit of 187 thanks to Adrian Warne’s unbeaten 79 and 44 from Cornwall Over 50s captain Paul Clements, who had earlier taken 2-30.

Warne was also in the wickets, including claiming the key wicket of Sam Stacey for 52.

The top two both won close-run contests in Division Four East with Bude seconds scraping home by two wickets at their Menheniot-Looe counterparts, who had knocked up 198-4 in their 40 overs.

Thirties from Adam Williams (35), Jack Horwell (32) and skipper Gordon Wint (30) proved crucial with tailenders Gary Moore (9no) and Chris Carter (10no) seeing the job through.

They’re now 14 points ahead of Luckett, who somehow defended 164 on a road at Pencarrow.

Only Will Pascoe (20) passed 20 in a total boosted by all of the top eight reaching double figures before Martin Budge (5-47) and Adrian Berry (2-40) got the majority of the wickets as Pencarrow came up 12 short despite having two wickets in-hand.

There was a welcome return to form for Delabole as they powered past Lanhydrock by 119 runs.

Seventies from Aaron Vercoe (73) and Adrian Pooley (75) helped them reach 244-5. Jordan Blanchard then took 5-26 from 10 overs as Lanhydrock were rolled over for just 125.

Launceston seconds made it back-to-back victories as they edged past St Erme by 26 runs at Castle Field after Phil Spry made 47 in their 166 all out while Milton Abbot fell to a 39-run defeat at Bugle in their pursuit of 283 with Jake Phillips’ 65 the highlight.

In Division Five, former Werrington first team captain, Nigel Dennis, made it 589 runs from just eight innings for the fourths this term following his 153 not out at Ladock seconds.

Nick Wills’ side smashed 272-1 off their 40 overs with Adam Paynter (40) and Scott Baker (57no) adding valuable support.

Youngster Daniel Howgill then ripped through the home side with 5-37 as they cruised to a 135-run success.

The other game involving two Post area teams at Gunnislake saw Tintagel seconds concede.

South Petherwin’s excellent run of form continued as they won by nine wickets at Grampound Road fourths in Division Six East.

Connor Warne (3-22) and Gareth Clements (3-2) shared six wickets as nine-man Grampound were all out for 75 before Roger Gerry’s unbeaten 35 guided them home in 12 overs.

Callington thirds conceded their match at St Austell fourths.
