DELABOLE?Cricket Club held its annual presentation evening at the Poldark Inn in the village on?Saturday, October 22.
2016 proved to be a massive success for the club with the team surpassing its own expectations to win Division Five East and return to Division Four following relegation in 2012.
The winners of the awards were as follows:
Batsman of the Year —Adrian Pooley; Bowler of the Year — Drew Burnard; Supporters Player of the Year —Mac Irwin ; Players Player of the Year —Adrian Pooley; Young Player of the Year — Kyle Binney; Best Seasons performance by any player — Kyle Binney (6-16); Captains Players of the Year — Jack Oulton and Regan Burrell; Clubman of the Year — Glen Burrell
Club helpers, Phil Carnon, Hilary Carnon and Mike Barrett were awarded a bottle of alcoholic daring each.
Reflecting on the season and looking forward to 2017, club captain, Glen Burrell, was delighted, but knows that next season will throw up plenty of challenges for his young side.
Glen said: “Ahead of the season just gone we were just looking to keep the club going and aim for somewhere in mid-table.
“We only have one team and at times raising 11 each week is a challenge. However we managed to have eight or nine core players and we only used 18 players in total which is quite good really.”
Over the last couple of years, there have been a steady influx of young players into the club, something which Glen believes helped the club enormously, although he knows it won’t be like that next term.
Glen said: “The youngsters made a massive difference for us. Our fielding has improved so much as they’ve been able to chase down things the older players wouldn’t have got near but we still have a few experienced heads who have been able to contribute.
“The problem is next season is that we’ve already lost one player to football while someone else is going travelling.
“There’s also the prospect of losing three more to a higher standard and that means longer football season’s and only a six week gap to fit some cricket in.
“However we have all agreed that we want to go up. Next season will be about aiming to stay up and make sure that the cricket club continues to remain in Delabole.
“We could really do with some players in their twenties or thirties to keep the team going.”
