LWC Drinks Cornwall Cricket League round-up — Saturday, July 7
IT WAS a remarkable day of cricket in Cornwall on Saturday as the nation tuned in to watch England take on Sweden in the quarter-final of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
With Gareth Southgate’s men on the verge of a first appearance in the last four since Italia 90, Cornwall Cricket relaxed the rules to allow clubs the chance to watch the game live at 3pm.
Of the 67 games scheduled, 13 were moved to another date, 28 fixtures started earlier with any game having to be a mimimum of 20 overs a side, 19 remained unaltered and the rest were conceded.
Eighteen games started by 11am with Callington seconds against local rivals Tideford getting underway at 9am.
Despite that, there were some excellent results for Post area teams.
Werrington backed up their Clive Rosevear Insurance Hawkey Cup success on Wednesday night by winning by two wickets at Grampound Road in the ECB Cornwall Premier League.
The home were all out for 212 with Alex Ridd making 88 while Jono Baldock (3-37) and Ben Smeeth (2-38) were among the wickets.
In a remarkable chase, nine of the ten visiting batsmen reached double figures although only Paul Smith (38) and Nick Lawson with 29 passed twenty.
However Tom Lyle and number ten Darren Webber, who each scored 19, held their nerve to gain the 31 runs required and move fifth-placed Werrington to within 14 points of top spot after leaders Penzance lost at home to Truro.
At the other end of the division, Callington failed to take advantage of Wadebridge not having a game as they were thrashed at Redruth by 123 runs.
The Reds declared on 279-6 from 45 overs with only South African Rashard Fuller’s 2-29 making much headway.
Aidan Libby continued his excellent form with a hard-hit 53 and there were twenties for Toby May (28) and Andrew Brenton (20), but that was as good as it got as they lost their last six wickets for just 34 runs.
In County Division One, bottom club Launceston picked up their second win in succession after winning by one-run at Rosudgeon.
The long trip West looked like it was going to prove fruitless when they were reduced to 78-6 after Michael Bolt (33) and Kevin Worth (23) were among the victims of South African Aaron Paul (4-51).
However important, drawn-out contributions from David Sillifant (27 off 55 balls), Brandon Forsyth (11 off 38), Matt Davey (6 off 49) and Matthew Bloomfield (16 not out of 22) — including 34 for the tenth-wicket between Davey and Bloomfield ensured they reached 155 all out.
Regular wickets fell throughout the home innings with Sam Pengelly (3-16 off 10) and Robert Mutch (2-36) doing most of the early damage, however at 140-7 and 152-8 the second-placed hosts looked on course for a crucial win.
However Ryan Christophers (4-35 off 9.2) knocked over Max Walden and number ten James Greenwood Penny to spark wild scenes in the away camp ahead of Saturday’s huge relegation clash at home to Newquay, whose scheduled clash at Werrington seconds was rearranged.
In Division Two East, Luckett are back on top spot after beating Grampound Road by 20 runs at Chapel Field.
Luke Brenton hit 88 in their 251-9 before Mark Southcott (3-24) and Jonny Hoskin (3-33) did the damage with the ball in a brilliant game.
They’re now five points ahead of Bude who lost by 47 runs at St Austell seconds.
Andrew De Rosa had a good all-round game for the visitors with 2-42 and 39 not out but the North Cornwall club could only end up on 204-9.
Callington seconds’ recent poor form continued as they lost by five wickets at home to Tideford despite Peter Tancock’s unbeaten 60 in their total of184-8.
In Division Three, the clashes between Holsworthy and Wadebridge seconds and Werrington thirds were rearranged although South Petherwin snuck home by two wickets at St Neot in pursuit of 94 after a great all-round bowling performance.
Division Four East leaders Bude seconds didn’t even need to step foot on the field as St Erme seconds conceded their clash at Crooklets while Martin Budge (81no) and Ashley Small (64no) guided Luckett to an eight-wicket victory at Milton Abbot in a 30-over game.
Mark Jenkins top scored for Milton Abbot with 65 in their 195-5.
Adrian Pooley blasted 87 not out for Delabole as they eased to an eight-wicket success in their chase of 136 in a 20-over game at Menheniot-Looe seconds while Launceston seconds’ topsy-turvy season continued as they lost by one-wicket at home to struggling Pencarrow after posting 174-8.
Werrington fourths were given a hammering at leaders Buckland Monachorum in Division Five East as they were bowled out for just 64 in a 218-run loss while Gunnislake were easily brushed aside at home to second-placed Saltash St Stephens in a 105-run defeat.
The clash between Launceston and Tintagel saw over 500 runs scored for the loss of just five wickets but it was Ben Lane’s unbeaten 101 which eventually triumphed over Lewis Matthews’ maiden league century for Launceston (145) as the hosts won by eight-wickets in pursuit of 260.
In Division Six, South Petherwin thrashed eight-man St Austell fourths by 140 runs with Roger Gerry scoring 112 not out in their 288-4 while Callington thirds conceded their trip to Newquay fourths.
