FOR the first time in ten years Cornwall Premier League Champions Werrington approach the season with a change in Captain of the 1st XI, with Adam Hodgson replacing Ben Smeeth, who has stood down.
Ben, who will continue to play, has overseen what has undoubtedly been the most successful playing period in the Club’s history. Adam has been Vice Captain for much of that time and he is looking forward with great enthusiasm to continuing the success and leading the Club in its fight to retain the Cornwall Premier League title in 2016.
On his appointment Adam said: “I am absolutely buzzing for the season, to be named captain of this awesome club was a proud day, and it’s only just sinking in now! But I am really looking forward to carrying on Ben’s amazing work and taking the club to the next level. We have recruited a first class South African which is great, I am really happy with the group of players I have and feel we have the quality to compete on all fronts.”
The 2nd XI had an outstanding season in 2015, securing promotion to County 1 for the first time. This was a terrific achievement, with Captain Mark Hodgson dragging the team up by its boot laces from mid-league mediocrity to become deserved Champions of Division 2.
As far as the club are aware no 2nd XI team has managed to remain in County 1 the year following promotion, so there is sure to be a tough season ahead, but the team are very much up for the challenge.
The third and fourth teams remain in Divisions 3 and 5 respectively; they will again be captained by Richard Stanbury and Nick Wills. Both sides are a mix of both the young and the experienced and have proved to be a valuable stepping stones in the development of the youth players at the Club.
The Club are thrilled to once again be hosting a Minor Counties One Day fixture, Cornwall playing Oxford at Werrington on the 22nd May.
The Werrington Ladies Committee, without whom the Club would certainly not be what it is today, will again be working tirelessly fundraising whilst hosting events such as the annual mid-season luncheon and the renowned ‘Big Breakfast’.
Friday nights at Ladycross see Youth training for anyone between the ages of 8 and 15 to go along from 6:45pm to enjoy the fantastic coaching facilities.
Chairman Richard Jenkin said: “Good luck to players, supporters and officers of the club; we look forward to welcoming visiting teams and supporters to Werrington Cricket Club this coming season”
