CALLINGTON moved into the last four of the Hawkey Cup following a resounding 131-run victory over neighbours Menheniot-Looe at Moores Park (see scoreboard – p26).

The tie was called off early in the afternoon due to a waterlogged square, before both clubs agreed to switch it to Callington.

After losing the toss, Menheniot – victors over County One side Lanhydrock in the last round – got off to a great start as dangerous teenager Kian Burns was caught by Mike Maiden off Tom Rogers for a second ball duck.

Aidan Libby (12) went off at his usual quick pace, but Rogers bowled him for 12 to make it 19-2.

From there, Callington rebuilt their innings before launching a furious assault towards the back end.

Rhys Davies and Dan Davis took the score to 62 before the latter was caught by Rogers off veteran left-arm spinner Hugh Rogers for 19.

It was then the Luke Brenton show as once Hugh Rogers had finished a tidy spell of 4-0-22-1, he ended up whacking five fours and as many sixes in a 27-ball 63 that altered the game completely.

Davies (71no off 49) gradually upped the ante while Ollie Allsop came in at six to hammer 32 off just 12 balls as Callington ended on 214-5 off their 20 overs.

Menheniot got off to a decent start as Luke Ripley (12) and Hugh Rogers (13) took a liking to Rob Mutch (0-20 off two), but once Ripley was caught by Joe White off Sam Pengelly (1-14), the momentum slowed.

From there on, wickets fell at regular intervals, with 14-year-old Ben Alford, on his first-team debut, taking 4-18 off his four overs, and leg-spinner Harry Sawyers 3-11. Ross Ripley was unbeaten on 20, but Menheniot were all out for just 81.

Down at Egloshayle Park, Wadebridge set up a semi-final with Callington with a routine seven-wicket victory over Werrington.

Former Wadebridge wicketkeeper Nick Lawson won the toss, but the visitors, who were missing Adam Hodgson and Ian Worsnip, struggled to score freely as James Turpin (2-14) and Charlie Ellis applied the breaks.

Werrington were 39-3 at the halfway stage with key men Ben Smeeth (17) and Mark Gribble (14) both out. In the end it took a ten-run over off the 20th to get them up to 86-6, with Adam Jenkin making 25 not out from 24 balls.

In response, Dan Barnard (1-22) bowled tightly, but Turpin (24) and Matt Butler made their way to 41 before Butler was caught by Hugh Tomkinson off Barnard for 17 off ten balls.

Jason Seldon (1-10 off three) continued his fine form by bowling the dangerous Turpin at 51-2, but Wadebridge were led home by Matt Robins, who finished unbeaten on 22.
