Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League scores

THE 2019 Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League season got underway on Saturday with some superb team and individual performances from the Post area clubs, on a day where temperatures soared.

In the newly-formed Tribute T20 Kernow Crash, defending ECB Cornwall Premier League champions Werrington proved far too strong for a weakened Callington at Ladycross in their double header.

In the first game, Callington won the toss and chose to bat but were held to just 71-8 off their 20 overs. New skipper Joe White top scored with 17 while for Werrington, Dan Barnard took 3-14 and Ben Smeeth 2-11.

Werrington knocked off the runs in just 10.2 overs despite the early loss of Paul Smith and Tom Hughes.

Opener Adam Hodgson made a patient 21 before Matt Robins (28no) and Mark Gribble brought the game to a swift conclusion.

The second fixture saw a remarkable unbeaten 143 from Smith as the home side won by 91 runs.

After choosing to bat, Hodgson was soon stumped for just three by White off the bowling of James Boundy (1-25) before Smith launched an astonishing assault on the visiting attack on a moving day at Ladycross where they paid tribute to Pauline Smeeth and Irene Horwell before play started.

He enjoyed 82-run partnerships with both Robins (18) and Gribble (16) before they eventually totalled 197-4.

Such was his acceleration, he brought up his 50 in 31 balls, his century in a further 23 balls before adding his final 43 in 15. He ended with 18 fours and seven towering sixes.

With a number of key men missing, Callington were never likely to get close and at 51-6 looked as if they were in for another heavy defeat. However, Nick Parker struck 50 off 32 balls to get them up to 106-9 when the overs ran out.

All eight Werrington bowlers took a wicket with Hodgson claiming 2-11 off his three overs.

While the firsts romped to a comfortable success at Ladycross, Werrington seconds’ County Division One campaign got off to the most dramatic of starts at their St Austell counterparts.

After being sent into bat, the visitors were going along well at 79-1 with Nick Adams (33) and Ben Jenkin (15) at the crease.

However, spinners Nick Matthews (2-19) and James Carter (2-25) accounted for both men in quick succession before skipper Mark Hodgson was given out lbw trying to sweep Matthews.

Although Adam Jenkin (13) and teenager John Moon took them past 100, the dismissals of Jenkin and Danny Warne for a duck put the home side firmly on top.

But Moon showed maturity beyond his years to add over 50 for the seventh wicket with Ian Worsnip (16).

With a handful of overs remaining, Werrington started to accelerate up towards 200. Although Moon was eventually caught at cover for an excellent 57, the last wicket partnership of Robert Dymond (10no) and Dan Warring (6no) managed to get them to an above par score of 202-9.

The St Austell innings followed a pretty similar course, with Werrington pegging them back at regular intervals.

However the game took a firm swing in their favour when opener Carter was controversially adjudged to have been stumped by Dymond off Worsnip for 66.

From then on, St Austell battled gamely with tailenders Matthews (23), Fergus Connolly (12) and Ian Trembath (12) all contributing, and went into the last over to be bowled by Adams needing four to win.

But after a dot ball, Trembath looked to launch a booming cover drive but was brilliantly caught by Adam Jenkin in close to secure the most dramatic of wins.

Werrington’s local rivals Launceston got their season off to a perfect start by demolishing 10-man Troon at Lawhitton.

After choosing to field, opening bowlers Sam Pengelly (4-19) and Robert Mutch (3-10) ripped through the visitors’ batting line-up before Peter West (1-22) and Andrew Yelland (1-14) helped out.

Only Gavin Tregenza’s unbeaten 27 saved them from a much more embarrassing situation.

In reply, Launceston got off to a disastrous start as Michael Bolt and Brandon Forsyth were both dismissed by Dan Walker (2-14) for ducks.

However, Pengelly joined forces with Michael Diebner to see them over the line without any further scares, with both men finishing unbeaten on 30.

Launceston head to Gorran this Saturday.

In Division Two East, the first century of the season went to Luckett skipper Ryan Brown as they thrashed Bude by 92 runs at Crooklets.

After the Brown brothers Richard and Marc got them off to a good start with 27 apiece, the rest of the innings was dominated by Luke Brenton (68) and Brown who eventually finished unbeaten on 100.

Once Brenton was dismissed by Matt Williams for a fine 68 (2-48), Leion Cole (28) and Andrew Hoskin (10no) provided some late fireworks as they ended on 298-4 off their 45 overs.

Bude’s batting is their strength and it looked like it could be game on as openers Tom Hall (29) and Warren Rumble (69) got stuck into the Luckett bowling before Matt Mansbridge, who had earlier conceded 45 runs from two overs, was promoted up the order to attack and made 35.

But once those three were out, Luckett shut the game down brilliantly as they finished on 206-8.

Cornwall Over 50s bowler Mark Southcott bowled with great control to take 3-22 from his 12 overs with Matt Shapland taking 3-56.

Luckett are at home to Roche on Saturday while Bude go to Grampound Road seconds.

The other Post area club in action were St Minver, but they fell to a two-wicket defeat at Tideford.

Despite losing Antony Ash and Will Durrant early on, Ryan Pooley made a typically entertaining 75 on his return to the club from Wadebridge as he and Rob Hawken gave them an excellent platform to push on.

But once Pooley was dismissed by Nathan Lister at 111-3, the visitors failed to accelerate, ending on 174-6 with Hawken still there on 44.

Tideford is a small, fast-scoring ground and the home side got off to a flyer as Dan Robotham thrashed 11 boundaries in his 54.

Despite taking three quick wickets to make it 92-3, the home side continued to attack with Steve Kidd (15), Josh Taylor (20), Nathan Lister (11) taking them up to 146-4.

However Ross Keast returned for a second spell and ripped through Tideford as they fell to 147-8.

But Mark Lister showed his experience, albeit with an element of luck through some edged boundaries, to get them home.

St Minver welcome Ladock on Saturday.

It was a mixed start for the six Post area clubs in Division Three East.

Relegated teams Callington seconds and St Blazey met at Moores Park with the home side winning by 76 runs.

Peter Tancock led the way with 113 and was given excellent support by wicketkeeper James Moon with 70 and Liam Hunn’s 41 as they racked up a massive 306 all out.

St Blazey started strongly through Paul Carne’s half century, but once it became apparent they wouldn’t get close, they chose to bat time and reach 230-6 with Gary Jones making an unbeaten 58.

Such was Callington’s lack of discipline with the ball, they bowled 80 extras with Dinesh Thirupuvanarajah the pick with 2-55.

Holsworthy won the battle of the Post area clubs at Butts Field as they thrashed Tintagel by nine wickets.

The home side could only muster 102 all out with extras the top scorer with 43. Ryan Pooley made a typically attacking 28 but the pace of Matt Shepherd proved too hot to handle for the middle and lower order as he took 5-18 from just 5.1 overs after Jack Greening (3-33) and George Wilcox (1-19 off 10) did the damage early on.

In reply, openers Jack May (27) and Aiden Gerry (30no) along with some help from the Tintagel bowlers with 38 extras in 25 overs, meant they eased to victory.

South Petherwin pipped Holsworthy into third last summer as they started with a five-wicket home win over Boconnoc.

John Niblett made 91 in the Deer Park outfit’s 200-5 with ex-Luckett man Rob Piper making 41 on debut. Adrian Clements claimed 3-43.

However, Petherwin have Cornwall Over 50s duo Adrian Warne and Paul Clements to call upon and they led the way after the early loss of Adam Warne to Piper.

Adrian Warne made 37 before debutant Adam Howgill made 14 and Jacob Masters fell for a duck.

However Clements anchored the chase for an unbeaten 80 while he received good support from Phil Pridham (23) and Gareth Clements (18no) to see them over the line with 27 balls remaining.

Division Four East champions Launceston seconds got their season off to a disappointing start as they lost by three wickets at St Austell thirds.

After being put in, David Sillifant (21) and Darren Jenkin (51) took them to 60-1 before Sillifant was bowled by Andrew Bennetts.

Some reckless shots followed to spinners Toby French (3-37) and Angus Fosten (2-39) as Launceston fell to 115-7.

Teenage spinner Ethan Green then showed his promise by making an unbeaten 27 as he and Sam Bunn ensured they batted out the overs to reach 157-8.

Bunn and David Cox each took an early wicket but with Craig Richards (27) and Grant Williams (46) at the crease, the home side looked in control at drinks, needing less than 80 with eight wickets in-hand.

However Sillifant (4-29) took three wickets in four overs, including both set batsmen to make a game of it.

But Tom Harris (19no) and Tom Rosevear (19) took advantage of some wayward bowling to help guide them over the line with ten balls remaining.

Bude seconds were also promoted last term and fell to a 77-run defeat at St Neot.

Skipper Gordon Wint (4-24) took four late wickets to help restrict the hosts to 201-7.

But the home side are a tough nut to crack at Wenmouth and dismissed Bude for just 124 with only Wint (35), Mark Whitefield (18) and wicketkeeper Anthony Greaves (17) making any real impression.
