AFTER months of lovely weather, Saturday saw almost a complete washout across the county as rain swept in throughout the morning before continuing for most of the day.
In the Post area, the big winners were Werrington.
It was their turn to have a bye in the ECB Cornwall Premier League, which consists of 11-teams after Hayle pulled out back in late March.
Leaders Penzance had their clash with Wadebridge cancelled while Truro’s abandonment against St Austell at Boscawen Park ensures that Werrington are just eight points off the summit with a game in-hand.
Truro are 11 points further back and also have played one match fewer than Penzance, but thankfully for them, still have to go to Werrington on Bank Holiday in what could be a potential Premier League decider.
The Ladycross outfit then have Penzance to play at home on September 1 in what could be a season-defining five days for Paul Smith’s men (see below).
In County Division One not a ball was bowled in anger across all six matches.
On Saturday, second bottom Launceston have a vital clash at fellow strugglers Roche on Saturday (1pm) while Werrington seconds can breathe easily in mid-table ahead of their trip to basement boys St Erme knowing they could do their local rivals a huge favour.
It was a bad day for Callington as both their seconds and thirds had to concede their fixtures against St Austell seconds and Pencarrow seconds respectively.
That was the fifth time the thirds have had to do so this season, which under league rules means they’re automatically kicked out of the league.
The second team had nine missing with the Boardmasters festival at Newquay mainly to blame, and with them facing the league leaders, it was sensibly decided to concede rather than blood not-ready kids.
The other winners in the Post area were Tintagel as Gorran seconds were unable to fulfill their fixture at Butts Field in Division Three East.
