THE?first-round of the North Cornwall Table Tennis League Handicap Knockout Cup took place last week with Budehaven A being the biggest team to fall by the wayside.

Budehaven lost 6-3 at home to Division Two side Crackington B.

Most of the matches went to three sets although in the end the large headstart in favour of Crackington proved decisive.

There was a mixed night for Budehaven.

The B team hammered Division Two counterparts North Hill B 8-1 away from home as the slight headstarts proved even more important when all six players are of a fairly similar level.

Budehaven C were edged out 5-4 by Division Three team Bridgerule A.

Allan Quilter was in inspired form, winning all three matches with ease.

The left-hander is unbeaten in Division Three and showed that he could mix it with some of the best players in Division Two.

There B team suffered a tough defeat at Blisland despite starting a long way ahead.

A much-changed Altarnun team lost 6-3 against Budehaven D.

With regulars, Paul Burden, Simon?Holmes and Geoff Hale not playing, Jamie Sims, Alex Whitfield and Luther Williams stepped up to the plate.

However Division Three’s second-best player, Nathan Jukes proved too strong for them.

The interclub clash between Helland A and B went the way of the A team as they won 7-3.

North Hill A won their potential banana-skin clash at Helland C 7-2.

North Hill C and Launceston had the game of the first round as the handicaps set out proved correct.

Launceston edged North Hill out 5-4 with the total points aggregate score being an amazing 355 points to 354, showing just how close the games were.

This week the league programme starts again.

In Division One, Crackington A host Torridge while Helland A are scheduled to take on Budehaven A.

In?Division Two, league strugglers Crackington B host league leaders Helland B while second-placed Budehaven C face a tricky test at North Hill B while Launceston host Budehaven B.
