North Cornwall Table Tennis League 2019/20 weekly round-up

NORTH Hill A remain unbeaten in Division One after a 7-3 victory at Budehaven B on Thursday night.

Close victories for Ashley Taylor and David Ewen over Martin Hynes, which included Ewen winning three of the five sets 12-10, meant the hosts were all square at 2-2.

However the duo of Michael Briggs and Shirley Luckhurst are two of the top players in the league and although Luckhurst was forced to fightback from 2-1 down to beat David Sillifant, they each won all three with relative ease.

Sillifant beat Hynes 3-0 to give the hosts another point, but Briggs and Luckhurst combined to take the doubles and ensure a 7-3 win.

Torridge whitewashed Budehaven D 10-0 at North Tamerton Village Hall. David Streak and Steve Cragg both went through the night without dropping a set, although David Stone had to withstand a superb comeback from Gary Bickle before securing victory at 13-11 in the decider. They are now 11 points clear of North Hill, having played twice more.

Budehaven A are up to fourth after a 10-0 success at home to Budehaven C.

Mark Beaumont and Owen Salisbury were rarely tested all evening, however Dave Salisbury had to utilise all of his experience to remain unbeaten.

In the first match of the night he came back from 2-1 down to beat Robin Worden before defeating Sam Jennings, that after Jennings won the third and fourth ends.

Frank Barnes produced a brilliant treble as two-man Crackington A lost 7-3 at third-placed Helland.

Barnes saw off Ingus Abolnieks and Mike Fisher with relative ease before withstanding a superb comeback from Ritchie Bartlett to take the fifth end, 11-7.

The home trio all beat Ross Wilmshurst despite the Crackington captain claiming a couple of ends as well as the doubles.

The game of the season so far in Division Two saw leaders Crackington B edge out Budehaven E, 6-4.

Eight of the ten matches went to five ends.

Budehaven’s Ian Westaway fought back from 2-0 down to beat Keiron Chatterjea before Roy Stubbs doubled the lead.

From there, Crackington edged the crucial moments to go 6-2 ahead with Jane Johnson and Judith Cook claiming doubles as well as Chatterjea beating Ian Edwards and winning the doubles.

Westaway and Stubbs made the scoreline as close as the matches suggest by beating Johnson and Chatterjea respectively.

The other match in the division saw North Hill B beat Bridgerule by the same scoreline.

The hosts went 3-0 up with Adrian Davis, David Wilson and Michael Kinger all winning their first outings of the evening.

The second set of games saw Bridgerule pull it back to 4-2 thanks to victories for Alan Quilter and Jay Brewer, the latter taking the decider 11-9 against Michael Kinger.

Quilter and Brewer then claimed the doubles point as well before David Wilson made it two victories for the night to make it 5-3.

Quilter saw off Kinger to give Bridgerule hope for a draw, but Davis eased past Brewer to claim a treble. North Hill are two points clear of Budehaven E in second.

Altarnun B are now four points ahead of Budehaven G in the race for the Division Three title after a 5-0 success at Bridgerule C. Dave Jones and Mike Tremeer were in dominant mood, not dropping an end all night.

Budehaven G remain second after a 4-1 win over Budehaven H. David Scott snuck past the ever-improving Alex Worth to take the first game before Robert Clarke-Feltham doubled their advantage by beating Finlay McKinnon.

Worth then beat Clarke-Feltham to get Budehaven H on the board, before Scott took the honours in the final singles. The doubles were also won by the G team.

Budehaven F are a point back but with a game in-hand after losing 3-2 at home to Bridgerule B.

Ray Bewes was the star for the visitors, edging past Phil Hawken and Ezra Jukes in deciders to make it 2-2 after Jukes and Hawken had both just got the job done against Marcus Dymond.

However Bewes and Dymond combined to take the doubles and secure their third win of the season.
