MEMBERS of Bude Bridge Club were sad to learn of the recent passing of their friend and bridge colleague Dave Hicks.

His infectious good humour, gentlemanly conduct, excellent card play and occasional original bidding style will be greatly missed by everyone.

It was a reflection of the high esteem in which Dave was held, that many club members attended Bodmin Crematorium on October 17 at a service to celebrate his life, and afterwards for light refreshments at the Falcon Hotel, Bude.

• Jane Koldewey and Chris Nichols were part of the Cornwall C team that defeated Dorset at Dorchester during the month.

• Michael and Jean Brookes won the October Heat of the North Coast Wine Handicap Pairs and will receive a bottle of wine each with a limited edition label designed by club member Alan Merchant-White.

• The Leslie Davis Mix and Match competition resulted in a comprehensive victory for Mary Hopgood and Alan Merchant-White, who were way ahead of the field.

• Other winning partnerships during the month were Chris Nichols and Neil Trenaman; Mike Newman and Linda Ashworth; Alan Biggs and Carole Reid; Ann and Bob Bennett; Sarah and Neil Trenaman; Mike Newman and Chris Nichols.

• Bude Bridge Club is always pleased to receive visitors from Cornwall, other parts of the country and abroad, and during the month welcomed Freda Starr, who was visiting the county from Australia.

He formed a winning partnership with Charles Clifton. Another successful visitor was Robin Wright from Dorset, who won with Alan Biggs.
