THE annual Captain vs Vice-Captain Challenge, in which the teams were drawn at random, was played by members of Launceston Golf Club Seniors on Tuesday, July 17.
As usual the scores were very close, but on this occasion captain Don prevailed over vice-captain Rob by 706 points to 697 points. A total 77 members played and there were prizes for the best pairs.
Results — 1, Paul Roach, Dave K Price, 46; 2, John Bassett, with wild card, 44; 3, Derek Medland, Peter Howard, 40; 4, John Ball, John Smith, 38, 5, Peter Jones, Dave Bundy, 38; 6, Mike Barriball, Bev Worth, 38.
On Monday, July 16 Launceston played Bigbury at Launceston. The start was delayed by over an hour due to inclement weather, but despite that the course was in great condition and the greens were excellent. On the first hole Martin Thompson's umbrella blew away and he did a fair impression of Usain Bolt. Launceston won by 3.1/2 to 2.1/2 and 8 to 4 overall.
Results — Rob Loughran, Martin Thompson, won 1 up; Dave Reynolds, John Goad, won 3 and 2; Neville Helme, Alan Ferguson, won 2 up; Pete Lyons, Robin Johnson, lost 2 and 1; Graham Williams, Colin Butler, halved; Brian Ben-David, Pete Fisher, lost 2 and 1.
