IT’S been a busy summer on the local junior tennis scene, writes Launceston Tennis Club’s head coach, James Brobin.
Launceston’s Matt Ryall qualified for the county finals of the Road to Wimbledon tournament at Perran Tennis Club on Sunday, July 16.
Matt went on to win the consolidation draw and throughly enjoyed his grass court experience.
The Wadebridge Summer Open, kindly sponsored by Estuary Estates and Bodmin Sport Trophies was the opening competition to Cornwall’s summer tournaments for 2017.
Lilly Mae Young (Bodmin) was the Orange winner, Jacob O’Hanlon (Bodmin) the Green winner and Jacob Martin (Wadebridge) the Mixed Singles winner.
The Launceston Open was a week later and a bumper entry saw Ruben Mudd (Launceston) win the Orange event and Archie Mallett (Newquay) the green event. There was also a Launceston double for Albert and Agatha Evans as they won the Junior Boys and Junior Girls titles respectively.
The RS Open at Bude followed on from Launceston and Ben Marshall (Wadebridge) took the honours in the Red event. Ted Brown (Newquay) was the winner in a strong Green competition.
The Junior Girls was again won by Agatha Evans of Launceston with James Cattell of Wadebridge winning the boys equivalent.
My many thanks to all the players, parents, relatives and friends that helped support these matchplay events along with my fellow coach Rachael Stacey. A big thank you to our sponsors for supporting the Wadebridge Summer Open and helping the event to another successful year of participation and progress.
At the time of writing the James Webster Cornwall County Championships 2017 have concluded and for a third year in a row I have to settle for the runners-up spot in the over 35s.
Plenty of room for improvement needed, even for the coach!
