Launceston Road Runners monthly report for July
JULY was a busy month for the road runners, as well as many of the club members entering and completing races, the club also held a social quiz night.
Maggie Dickinson and Ann Barriball organised the quiz night for club members to come along with family and friends to test their knowledge on a wide variety of subjects.
Maggie was also quiz master and along with the help of her two sons kept the teams in order and the scores on the board.
As well as the quiz, there was a raffle which raised £170 which will be donated to the Cornwall Air Ambulance later in the year.
The Cornwall Air Ambulance is also the chosen charity for the annual Treggy 7 road race which is organised by the club and takes place on Sunday, September 1.
The month kicked off with the Turkey Trot four-mile race on July 3 with Sarah Worth coming third in her age category.
Two days later saw three teams (two male, one female) from the club enter the St Erme relay.
The weekend of the July 13 to 14 saw three members take part in the Muddy Duck, a 10km multi terrain race where the course comprises of grass, woodland, water crossing and private roads around Radford Park in Plymstock. Darren Evan came sixth overall and finished in 39 minutes and 55 seconds.
That weekend also saw Adrian Brown compete in Race to the Stones 100k ultra run, he completed this in 20:51:18. Jo Bailey stayed local and took part in the Lydford Dash five-mile multi terrain and Alan Littlejohns took a trip to Lundy Island and completed the Lundy Island Half Marathon on Sunday, July 14.
Thursday, July 18, saw 28 members go over to Tavistock for the Tavy relays. Teams of four had to run a mile before handing over the baton to the next team member. Team names were LRR Aerobically Challenged (24:55), LRR Should of Turned Left (26:22), LRR Achilles Heels (27:59), LRR Legs Miserable (29:27), LRR Curue du Sore Legs (30:05), LRR Wind in Our Hair (33:18) and LRR Addicted to the Track (33:33).
July 28 saw a large attendance at the challenging Magnificent 7, organised by the Tamar Trotters. In total 28 members ran this challenging, hilly, seven-mile road race with Brian Wiles coming first in his age category in the time of 56:57, Martin and Jayne Hynes both coming third in their age categories. Sarah Worth sacrificed her race because of a loose horse on the course causing havoc after being spooked by runners, Sarah ran back about a mile to inform the marshal about what was happening.
And finally, Emma Baker, Jon Roberts, Kelly Sargent, Mary Roberts and Phillipa Baker took part in the first race of the Cornish Multi Terrain Race Series — the Tywardreath Trotter which is a seven-mile run between St Austell and Fowey. Emma was the third female to cross the finish line in 50:13.
The club also like to remind the local community that the annual Treggy7 road race will be held on Sunday, September 1, and that there will be delays to road users between 10am and 12pm.
A club spokesperson said: “Please come along and cheer the runners and also pop into Launceston Town Hall and find the cake stall, all proceeds from the cake stall will go to the Cornwall Air Ambulance.”
