Monthly Report (December)
BUDE Bridge Club are delighted that Chris Nichols has been promoted to a 1 Star Premier Tournament Master by the English Bridge Union.
Chris has amassed over 50,000 masterpoints, of which more than 42,000 have been awarded over the last 24 years playing at Bude, Barnstaple and elsewhere.
Masterpoints are only awarded to the top third of the field and he can be justifiably proud of this achievement.
Chris continues to play at county level and together with his most regular bridge partner, Jane Koldeway, were part of the Cornwall ‘C’ Team that beat Devon 15 -5 in a recent Western Counties League match.
Alan Biggs and Rob Mably were part of the Cornwall ‘B’ Team that lost their match 14-6.
Alan topped the individual averages for 2016 with 57.25%, followed by Chris with 56.88% and Steve Clifton in third with 56.83%.
Chris and Jane topped the pairs averages with 56.73%, followed by Ann and Bob Bennett with 54.7% and Neil and Sarah Trenaman in third with 53%.
Both of the above competitions are based on more than 20 appearances.
The December heat of the North Coast Wine Handicap Pairs was won by James Sim and Mary Hicks, while Fiona Hargreaves emerging victorious in the June Justice Individual Trophy.
Other evening winning pairs during the month were Steve Clifton and Chris Nichols who won together twice, Ann and Bob Bennett and Micheline Smith and Russ Colledge.
Special mention should be made of Peter Fairbrother who came second with Stephen Smith on a club night. This was Peter’s first taste of competitive bridge having only joined the Wednesday afternoon beginners group about six weeks previously.
The club hopes that this may encourage more Wednesday afternoon players to make the step up, especially if there is a more experienced player available to partner them.
The Wednesday Afternoon Bridgeplay was won by the experienced Bob Bennett and newcomer, John Reid.
Penny and Terry Abbott only learnt to play bridge this year and not only won a Wednesday afternoon session for the first time but also attended some evening sessions where they gave a good account of themselves.
Further details regarding the activities of the club can be found on their website at www.bridgewebs/bude
