Bude Pilot Gig Club

A FANTASTIC weekend for the Bude Pilot Gig club at the 27th World Pilot Gig Club Championships. The bank holiday started with the Ladies moving up two places from last year in the St Agnes to St Mary’s race.

Saturday then saw the start of the heats for both men and ladies teams rowing from St Agnes to St Mary’s in a mass start of over 150 boats — the largest number entered ever!

In the afternoon, seeded into groups, the teams took part in the Tresco to St Mary’s race. The aim here is to stay within your group or finish in the top two to move into the next group up. Sunday saw the teams complete in two more of the Tresco to St Mary’s races.

In the ladies’ final heat, Bude in their gig, Bedehaven, fought off their opposition in group J to win with a four boat lead — the same group for the last two years.

The men’s team went up one group after finishing the long race then managed to stay in that group for the final — finishing two groups higher than last year and coming 79th.

If you would like to try Pilot Gig rowing, Bude Pilot Gig Club meet at the Upper Tamar Lake on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
