Verde Recreo Hockey League
Southern Two
Plymouth Marjon C 3
Bude 1
BUDE could not build on last week’s 4-2 victory over ECV Hornets A as they succumbed to a stubborn Marjon side in Plymouth intent on lifting themselves off the bottom of the table
Marjon had the better of the opening phases and took the lead midway through the first-half.
As chances came and went for both sides neither really stamped their authority on the game until late in the half, when the Devon outfit grabbed a second from close range.
Bude went into half-time disappointed but optimistic, as a two-goal lead in hockey can be easily and quickly overturned, especially as they were creating good chances of their own.
This optimism was turned into a reality as David Woodward scored from a well-worked short corner routine to halve the deficit.
A tense affair ensued and Bude pushed hard for an equaliser, but it was not to be as Marjon scored a third which really dented the visitors’ momentum.
Bude never fully recovered and the score remained the same until the final whistle where a jubilant Marjon team celebrated a hard-fought three points.
The North Cornwall outfit will look to bounce back this Saturday when they welcome third-placed Penzance to the Budehaven Sports Centre (2.30pm).
The ladies, who were without a game at the weekend, are back in action on Saturday when they head to Tiverton Leisure Centre (midday) to tackle White Eagles in the South Division of the West Clubs Women’s Hockey League.
