A DISABLED powerlifter from Launceston has walked away with a bronze medal from her first Paralympic competition.

Jade Farrington, 26, competed against athletes from Great Britain and Holland, including Zoe Newson who took bronze at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

She travelled to the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Powerlifting 2013 UK Bench Press Championships in Kent and lifted 60kg on a special Paralympic bench, despite having been on one just once before.

Jade's left femur was replaced with a metal prosthesis following bone cancer aged nine and she has been accepted onto the official training programme with the aim of qualifying for the Rio Paralympics in 2016.
