BOSCASTLE and Crackington Gig Club are celebrating the most successful season in their 12-year history.

Last weekend, the Men’s A team won the six-mile long Helford River Race on what turned out to be a glorious autumnal afternoon.

The win was the icing on the cake for the club who have accumulated a host of trophies this year, starting with the Easter Bonnet race at Rock.

This was followed by winning the Plastic Gig Championships at Pendeen in April, then a great performance by the club at the World Championships on the Isles of Scilly in May with the Men’s A team achieving an amazing 24th out of approximately 150 gigs, and the ladies’ coming 44th, a huge leap up from previous years.

Next came a first in the Appledore History Race, again for the Men’s A team, followed by trophies for the Men’s B and Ladies’ B at the Barnstaple Regatta.

At Port Isaac in August, the Men’s A and Ladies’ A were the victors with the club winning overall, the next day at Boscastle’s own regatta, the Men’s A and B teams took the honours.

At Caradon, the Men’s C picked up the silverware, with the Men’s A smashing their race at the Torridge Regatta. On a beautiful sunny afternoon in September, the club headed down to Devoran for their much anticipated fancy dress regatta. Despite the somewhat restricting outfits, the Men’s A and mixed crews were winners with some excellent performances by the rest of the club, Boscastle won the top overall club trophy.

Reflecting on their excellent achievements, club chairman, Phoebe Millar, said: "This is the best season ever for our club and we are setting our sights even higher for next year.

“I would like to thank everyone for their commitment and hard work in supporting me in my first year as chairman and I look forward to the club hopefully gaining more future success.”
