BOSCASTLE and Crackington Gig Club competed at the World Pilot Gig Championships on The Isles of Scilly from Friday, May 4 to Sunday, May 6, where they were blessed with blue skies and calm seas.
The club took a large squad with eight ladies competing for the first time.
On the Friday night, the Ladies Supervets rowed strongly, in beautiful conditions, to finish in 26th position out of 34 teams while the club’s male Supervet, Kev Sanders, joined forces with Port Isaac and finished in a magnificent 7th.
Lady Vet rower, Avril Sainsbury, rowed with Mevagissey to finish an impressive 15th on their Smudger gig.
The long race from St Agnes to St Marys on Saturday was keenly fought in both the ladies and men’s race, with both attracting over 150 boats.
The Men’s A team were very pleased to stay in Group B for the second year following and finished 24th in the club gig named Torrent, an excellent achievement for a relatively small club.
The Ladies A team finished in a very solid 52nd while the Ladies B crew, who were all first-timers, came in a very respectable 90th position.
The Ladies C team which included two ladies from Bridport improved on their last years position coming second in Group M and 146th overall in the gig named Christine H.
Club chairman, Phoebe Millar, was delighted with the way the weekend went and urged members to start planning for next year which will be the 30th anniversary of the championships and likely to be the last one before the number of gigs competing will be capped to 120.
