THE annual Goodacre Cup took place at Roadford Lake recently across the Bank Holiday weekend.

Held across Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the regatta, which was hosted jointly by South West Lakes Trust and Roadford Lake Sailing Club (RLSC), again proved to be a tremendous success.

The weekend presented some challenging conditions, with wind speeds ranging from 0 to about 16 knots, but despite this, the standard of racing was high and everyone enjoyed the weekend.

An enthusiastic group of junior sailors from Paignton came down in their Toppers, along with some Fevas from North Devon and juniors from Roadford Lake’s junior division.

The overall winners were Roadford members Bill and Sally Anderson while the winners of the Andy Parsons Cup, awarded to the first placed visiting club, were Matthew and Alice Butler from Stewartby Sailing Club, located in the south west of Bedford. Sarah Hallett, one of this year’s organisers and centre administrator, said: “The Goodacre Cup is one of the highlights of the sailing calendar at Roadford. Thanks to the hard work of RLSC volunteers and the Outdoor and Active team, the event offers high quality racing for all! Our aim for next year is to have even more of the fleet to come from junior sections – they are the future after all!”

The volunteer race management team did exceptionally well in ensuring the event was both professional and fun with lots of smiling faces on the final day. This was further added to with great catering throughout the weekend including the evening barbecue and cream teas at the prize giving.

This year’s event attracted generous sponsorship from Ambrosia, Ginsters, Red Paddle Co, Hyde Sails and Volvo British Sailing Team who sponsored Team GB’s sailing Olympians in Rio de Janeiro.

There are plenty of opportunities to take part in activities at Roadford Lake, including tuition, hire and a number of events.

The club is already looking forward to the Goodacre Cup returning next year and hope to see even more boats competing.

Upcoming events include weekly club racing on Sundays from 11.30am (guests welcome), the Peter Bartlett Cup Junior Regatta on Sunday, September 11 and Bart’s Bash a week later.
