AQUA Stars Life Saving Club have returned from the Cornish Rookie Lifesaving competition with a well-deserved first and third place.
The RLSS Cornwall Branch offered the Holsworthy-based club a wildcard entry into their recent inaugural competition, a decision that the local Cornish clubs may have been regretting after the Aqua Stars Goldfish team took the top place, winning six out of the seven races.
Being a rookie competition, the event is around fun and safety as much as competition, and the event saw races such as egg and spoon, noodle riding and ball pushing alongside the normal swimming style.
Aqua Stars also supported the other teams present by lending four members to bolster their numbers and ensure a fair competition was held.
Laura Morrish, Aqua Stars’ director of swimming, said: “It was a great experience for the lifesaving club members as the club was able to take a number of the younger members to compete and represent not only the club but in effect the county!”
The RLSS Cornish Branch has only recently been rekindled and Andy Squirrell, Aqua Stars Lifesaving Club coach said: “It was a real privilege to be offered a wildcard entry and to be able to help support the branch, the clubs and the competition to grow. We look forward to welcoming the attending clubs to the annual Aqua Stars Competition that we hold each November.”
All competitors were able to meet Lifeguard Maxi — the RLSS ambassador for Tourism Australia and Royal Life Saving Society United Kingdom where he promotes the Rookie Lifeguard program. Maxi is currently in the UK promoting water safety and full details can be found on his website at www.lifeguardmaxi.com.au
