LYDNEY Paralympic hopeful Andy Lewis had a taste of the weather conditions to come in Rio 2016 in the South African International World Series Triathlon.

The champ travelled for the race with his GB triathlon squad where he competed in 29 degree heat which, despite taking its toll, he walked away after swimming in some rough seas with a silver medal.

His next race is much closer to home – in Lydney to be precise – this Sunday (April 26) where he takes on the local course before heading out to Madrid, Yokohama in Japan and London's Hyde Park.

He said: "More than 150 people have entered into this Sunday's triathlon – which will be the first in Lydney and starts at 8am at Lydney Leisure Centre.

"The event is for training purposes in preparation for my international races but it will be great to see other local people who I know on the course.

"The great thing about this event is it offers beginners through to experienced triathletes a challenge. It also offers relay options where you can compete as a family."

He added: "I am currently the only GB para-athlete going to Japan at this time and will be travelling with the GB Olympic squad, including the likes of Adam Bowden, Olympic champion Alasdair Brownlee and local commonwealth girl Vicky Holland."

Although Rio 2016 seems a long way off, the pressure is already mounting for Andy as qualifying points start in July.

He said: "I now have a custom, hand-built bike to suit my disability thanks to Severn Valley Cycles of Lydney, which I hope will improve my bike work."

Andy says his dream is to see more people getting involved in biking, running and swimming.

"As I train around the Forest I see more people getting out on their bikes which is fantastic. I plan to work with the local team at Mini Rockets to help others into sport or become active including adults and children."
