Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race report — August 30

Tamar 8

THE day began wet, dreary and windless but the twelve boats that took the start found a gentle breeze, quite enough to sail with, which strengthened as the race progressed.

John Dabbs was first away, closely followed and soon overtaken by Jane Anderson. Jane Chadney in the other big-sailed Laser was snapping at her heels on lap one but was a minute behind by the end of this five lap race.

Further back Toby Tobias, not the only competitor to hit the marker buoy or other boats, seemed to be doing endless penalty turns and could never join the two-handed battle between the Comber/ Weller Enterprise and the Buckett/Pollard Bosun in which Alan Comber led for the first two laps before Nicky Buckett overtook.

When the handicaps were applied she went from 4th on the water to 1st but he descended from 5th to 10th! The Gull and the Toppers were also major beneficiaries of the handicapping system.

1. N Buckett, B Pollard (Bosun); 2. N Pollard (Topper); 3. J Anderson (Laser); 4. J Dabbs (Gull); 5. A Hilton (Solo); 6. J Chadney (Laser); 7. L Spiller (Comet); 8. V Duncalf (Topper); 9. R Spiller (Streaker); 10. A Comber, J Weller (Enterprise); 11. T Tobias, G Floyd (Bosun); 12. J Savage (Solo)

Cup Race 5

WITH the danger of windless drifting gone, the afternoon course was lengthened to go as far north as Pinky and the laps therefore went down to three.

The fleet had increased to sixteen and Roger Heasman judged his start beautifully to take a momentary lead.

Jane Anderson had reduced sail to a Radial. She overtook Roger but it was not until well into lap two that she was able to get any real distance ahead.

Linda Spiller had begun her race very well and the little Comet finished the first lap in 4th place but by the end of the second Robin was in front of her as was Paul Whybrow.

Neither the Bosuns nor the Toppers seemed able to make much progress and they were not much helped by the handicap in the final results. At the end the Officers of the Day were unable to separate the Heasman Streaker from the Hilton Solo as they went over the line but the Solo’s more advantageous handicap gave it 2nd place.

1. J Anderson (Laser R); 2. A Hilton (Solo); 3. R Heasman (Streaker); 4. L Spiller (Comet); 5. P Whybrow (Solo); 6. J Dabbs (Gull); 7. R Spiller (Streaker); 8. J Chadney (Laser R); 9. N Buckett, B Pollard (Bosun); 10. V Duncalf (Topper); 11. N Pollard (Topper); 12. J Savage (Solo); 13. R Pomeroy, J Pollard (RS200); 14. T Tobias, C Gilbert (Bosun); 15. A Comber, J Weller (Enterprise); 16. G Floyd (Solo)

Thanks were extended to Officers of the Day, Ken Lambert and John Buckett.
