Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club race report — Sunday, March 25

Barnwell Six

THE lakes trust hosted one of its biggest fishing competitions this past weekend, and with a high attendance expected the Barnwell Six was scheduled to start at 1.30pm.

Five single handers and three double handers were featured in the race on a bright sunny afternoon at the lake, however the safety boat took the early headlines. Duo Paul Anderson and Jane Chadney required a new fuel line to help their struggling engine, something that would eventually take almost two hours to complete. Eventually, just after 3pm, the race was underway.

Adam Hilton and John Dabbs were using the club Wayfarer for the first time, and saw immediate benefits as its speed and comfort saw them sail over the start line first.

Their speed allowed them to keep up with the Lasers (used by James Pollard and Bob Sampson respectively) in the early exchanges, however Pollard quickly established a lead over the Wayfarer he would never lose.

Jane Anderson had opted for the Topper in the strong morning winds and, due to the handicap, finished the race in first place, beating out the two Lasers.

Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert in their Bosun provided an accomplished showing, as their race ended in fourth place.

Lap by lap the positions seemed to stay the same after the initial troubles with the safety boat, as Toby Tobias and Sally Wills in the Bosun followed through into sixth place respectively, beating out the two solo racers in Nathan Pollard (Laser Radial) and Geoff Floyd (Solo) to complete the top eight.

Winner: Jane Anderson (Topper); Runner-up: James Pollard (Laser); 3rd: Bob Sampson (Laser); 4th: Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert (Bosun); 5th: Adam Hilton and John Dabbs (Wayfarer); 6th: Toby Tobias and Sally Wills (Bosun); 7th: Nathan Pollard (Laser Radial); 8th: Geoff Floyd (Solo)

Grateful thanks were given to Robin Spiller who ran the race and especially to Paul Anderson and Jane Chadney, for their struggles with the safety boat.

As a result, there was no time left to run the programmed Barnwell Seven.
