UTLSC Race Report — Sunday, July 24

Commodore 7

JANE Anderson was the winner of the Commodore 7 event held at the Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club on Sunday, July 24.

The weather was rather strange, the sea mist descended, lifted a little and descended again, while rain seemed determined to bring the lake up to winter levels and the wind blew from several directions at varying strengths. Nonetheless 12 boats took to the water to contest the race. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) led over the long Home 2 start line, followed by Bob Sampson and James Pollard with full-sized sails on their Laser’s . By the end of the lap, Bob had edged into the lead. Jane Chadney’s Radial led the next group in front of Sue Murray’s 4.7 Laser and Adam Hilton’s Solo. The Bosun of Nicky Buckett and Brian Pollard was ahead of both the Duncalfs’ Topper’s at the end of the lap, but was still behind Nathan Pollard. It took another lap for Nicky to get by him as the Topper’s slugged it out. The two Otter’s of John Buckett and John Savage brought up the rear, before both eventually retired. At the end, James Pollard led Bob Sampson and Jane Anderson, but the handicap gave Jane the victory.

1. J Anderson (Laser Radial); 2. J Pollard (Laser); 3. R Sampson (Laser); 4. N Pollard (Topper); 5. V Duncalf (Topper); 6. N Buckett, B Pollard (Bosun); 7. S Murray (Laser4.7); 8. J Chadney (Laser Radial); 9. J Duncalf (Topper); 10. A Hilton (Solo); Retired: J Savage (Otter) and J Buckett (Otter)

Pursuit 5

The miserable weather reduced the fleet to five for the Pursuit race that followed the Commodore 7 event.

Vicki Duncalf started first, followed after three minutes by Nathan Pollard, then the Buckett Bosun, Sue Murray and finally Bob Sampson. Vicki had long completed her first lap before Bob could even start, although he was in front of her in the murk at the top of the lake. Visibility was so bad the officer of the day sent out the rescue boat to make sure no one was drowning! Nicky Buckett overtook Nathan Pollard and eventually Vicki Duncalf to take the lead. Sue Murray was also making up ground, overtaking Nathan, but in the end it was Nicky who emerged victorious in the treacherous conditions.

1. N Buckett, B Pollard (Bosun); 2. V Duncalf (Topper); 3. S Murray (Laser4.7); 4. N Pollard (Topper); 5. R Sampson (Laser)

Thanks were also expressed to Linda Spiller and Cilla Gilbert for carrying out the duties of Officer of the Day.
