Upper Tamar Lake Sailing Club — March 13

Barnwell 2

SUNSHINE and a nice breeze which could not decide whether to blow from the north-east, the south or the south-east made for a pleasant but slightly unpredictable day’s racing.

Nine boats took off towards the Tamar Dam with Adam Hilton’s Solo first over the start line but faltering at the first mark and being overtaken by Jane Anderson (Laser Radial) and James Pollard (Laser).

James with the larger sail on his Laser overtook Jane on the second lap but didn’t get far enough ahead to overcome his handicap disadvantage and was second in the results.

Paul Anderson had the same experience in his Laser, overtaking the Solo on lap one but failing to get away far enough and was relegated to sixth in the results.

Toby Tobias in the Mirror was upgraded from sixth on the water to fourth in the adjusted results above Vicki Duncalf’s Topper.

1. J Anderson (Laser Radial); 2. J Pollard (Laser); 3. A Hilton (Solo); 4. T Tobias (Mirror); 5. V Duncalf (Topper); 6. P Anderson (Laser); 7. G Floyd (Solo). Retired: J Williams (Topper); J Buckett (Otter)

Barnwell 3

A FLEET reduced to seven took to the water for the second race.

Vicki Duncalf nearly false-started but managed to get back over the line and make a really good start in first place. She continued a fine race to gain third place on handicap.

Her lead however was momentary; James Pollard soon taking over with Jane Anderson following.

All the fleet had started on port tack except for the Solo which was on starboard, a manoeuvre which obtained it third place round the first mark.

John Buckett’s Otter slipped quietly along throughout the race to gain him fourth place, overhauling on handicap Jane Chadney’s Laser Radial which finished third on the water well ahead of the disaster-prone Solo.

1. J Pollard (Laser); 2. J Anderson (Laser Radial); 3. V Duncalf (Topper); 4. J Buckett (Otter); 5. J Chadney (Laser Radial); 6. A Hilton (Solo); 7. J Williams (Topper)

Thanks were expressed to Nicky Buckett for running the races, and to Brian Pollard, Jane Chadney and Paul Anderson for manning the safety boat.
