A YOUNG volunteer from Launceston was among 70 people who attended South West Lakes Trust’s 15th annual volunteers’ celebration at Lakeside, Roadford Lake.

Each year the region’s largest combined environmental and recreational charity celebrates the invaluable help of volunteers with certificates for special achievements.

Daniel Britten from Launceston was presented with the Young Volunteer of the Year Award by David Robertson, chairman of the trust.

The celebration began with a slideshow displaying images of the many projects, which could not have been achieved without the help of the South West Lakes Trust and Wheal Martyn volunteers. These included; conservation tasks, assisting at events and educational visits, exhibition research, site maintenance and much more. Last year South West Lakes Trust and Wheal Martyn accumulated a combined total of 5,879 days of assistance by volunteers and in return 133 days of training were offered in relevant skills.

After the awards presentation James Platts, policy and development director for South West Lakes Trust, spoke about the Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development which South West Lakes Trust was first awarded in 2010 and again this year for the whole of the trust, including Wheal Martyn.

After the ceremony attendees enjoyed a cream tea and were invited to visit a number of stands, manned by staff and volunteers, to find out more about the amazing volunteer opportunities and achievements which have taken place during the past year.
