BUDE Music Society recently presented a brilliant recital of Joo Yeon Sir and Irina Andrievsky to audiences at the Minstrels Music Centre, Canworthy Water.

On Sunday, February 19, audiences were given the ‘privilege’ to hear Joo Yeon Sir on violin and Irina Andrievsky on piano, dressed in striking scarlet and blue, play in the Minstrels Music Centre in Canworthy Water.

The programme opened with the Grieg Sonata. The playing was sensitive and detailed, with many absorbing details of tone and touch, as figures passed from player to player. The ensemble was very good, with dazzling points of technique from both soloists.

The same high standards were evident in the Tchaikovsky, where moments of tenderness and rapport were conveyed musically, making light of the technical challenges involved.

String players in the audience were amazed at the Spiccato bowing, and the exciting octaves played with consummate skill.

The second half of the programme was equally absorbing with wonderful flowing passages from both violin and piano in the Schnittke Suite, especially in the Fugal movement.

The Benjamin Britten Suite was the most challenging work in the programme, but in performance it was one of the most successful, with wonderful timings, points of detail, dynamics and rhythms, all projected with assurance and technical ease.

The final work in the programme was a wonderful arrangement of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess in which both soloists had thrilling Cadenzas ending this excellent recital.

A spokesperson said: “How lucky we were to have the chance of hearing these two young performers at the beginning of what surely must be impressive careers. Thank you Bude Music Society.”
