SURF School, Bude Surfing Experience, has joined forces with The Wave Project to deliver Surf Therapy to youths in North Cornwall.

The Wave Project is a charity, which was first piloted in Cornwall in 2010 and is currently running in 11 locations across the UK.

The award-winning projects help young people improve their health and wellbeing through an evidence-based programme.

Young people are referred to The Wave Project by professionals and through a team comprised of Wave Project staff, partner Surf Schools and volunteer Surf Mentors, youngsters are supported in an environment which enables them to thrive.

Budehaven Community School has been actively involved in the Wave Project for many years with fantastic results for the individuals involved.

The North Cornwall Project has been delivering its programme since 2012, operating from Polzeath and more recently Summerleaze beaches. By the end of 2018 the Surf Therapy project and Surf Club will have worked with over 200 young people aged eight to 21 years old across North Cornwall.

Mr Greig, a volunteer helper from Budehaven Community School and BSX said: “It’s a pleasure to spend time with these fantastic young people at the beach. They’re learning skills that build their confidence whilst enjoying our beautiful coastline.

“Budehaven has offered activities days through Bude Surfing. The Wave Project has two Budehaven students involved, and the project offers opportunities to other young people.”

Joe Taylor, Wave Project CEO, said: “It’s wonderful to see BSX teaming up with The Wave Project again. At The Wave Project we wholeheartedly believe in the healing powers of the ocean and it’s awesome to see so many members of the Bude community getting involved.”

Svenya Haffenden, Wave Project regional co-ordinator for North Cornwall said: “By getting youngsters into the water and enjoying the waves together we help their confidence and happiness to grow, which is a real privilege to see! We’re always on the lookout for new volunteers, you don’t need to be able to surf to help out. If you’re aged 14 plus, enjoy working with children and having fun we’d love to hear from you!”
