A SUPPORT worker from Holsworthy who works for Carewise, a Bideford based young carer support charity, recently organised a fun filled respite opportunity for the young people.

Support worker Jim Harvey organised a trip for a group of teenage carers to treat them to a sailing session with North Devon Yachting Club, based at Instow.

The event took place in glorious sunshine in August followed by a barbecue and hospitality at the clubhouse.

The fun didn’t stop there as a member was offered an additional week’s sailing training course, which was taken up by 13-year-old Abigail Sherwood from Barnstaple.

Mr Harvey said: “I must say a big thank you to Simon Fleet and his crew for giving the children such a fantastic opportunity.”

In September the Lion’s Club of Bideford again supported a day out to Watermouth Castle for the younger carers.

Mr Harvey said: “The Lions have been brilliant providing transport and entrance to the park. The youngsters had a fun packed day and I would like to thank Lions Mike Green for organising and Chris Payne for driving the bus.

“These types of opportunities are extremely important for young carers who often miss out on days out and opportunities to socialise because of their caring role and the impact on them of illness within their family.”
