PEOPLE came from miles around to view the flowers in this year’s Holsworthy Show Flower Tent.
With judging taking place in the morning, the owners of the wonderful displays didn’t have long to wait before they found out who had come top in the many floral classes.
This year’s theme was ‘Flights of Fancy’ and there was plenty to see with a tent packed full of creativity and flare.
Winner of the Allin Penhale Cup for ‘Best In Show’ was Flower Tent chairperson Liz Hodgson, Class 7.
On her win, Mrs Hodgson said: “I was extremely pleased to win the ‘Best In Show’ myself this year, which I first won in 1996 (20 years ago).
“My name has been on this cup eight times before, but not since 2006, so it was about time I bucked my ideas up!
“It’s not about winning but the taking part, and I was also very pleased that my grandaughter, Amy Hodgson, won two 1st prizes in the children’s class and flower arranging, but also a 1st in an adult class, beating none other than me! I will have to soon stop giving her tips.”
The ‘Best Use of Colour’, Symons Cup, went to Joan Trewin, Class 2. The Bleujen Florist Cup for ‘Judge’s Choice’ was awarded to Pat Boundy, Class 7.
Winning a special prize of the Roy Heard Cup, for the most points over all, was Joan Trewin, of Bude Flower Club. She spoke to the Post about her win and her ‘Tangled Beauty’ class entrance, saying: “I am very pleased, thrilled even, to have won this. The standard has been very high this year and competition has been tough as there have been lots more people entering with many new names in this year’s competition adding to it.
“It is really becoming popular which is great as we have been trying to encourage people to join from other clubs and have also been holding clubs for younger budding flower arrangers.”
Joan added: “I have been flower arranging for several years now and I used to own a flower shop in Bude.
“I passed my demonstrators test last year and am now a qualified demonstrator for the Devon and Cornwall area of NAFAS, the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies.
“Flower arranging is really my hobby, it has been a vicious circle; my hobby led me to open a flower shop which led me to take it up as a hobby again afterwards, but I do it because I enjoy it. I am looking forward to doing it all again next year.”
Runner up for the most points and gaining the Crane Trophy was, in joint place, Liz Hodgson and Yvonne Phillips.
